Weekend Update: Golden Knights Earn First Win For Co-Head Coaches

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The theme of the night was solid goaltending.  ECAC Hockey teams experienced this at both ends of the ice last night, as they continue to prepare for league-play.  One of the highlights of the evening was Clarkson stopping No. 6/6 Mercyhurst, 5-2.

At Clarkson 5, No. 6/6 Mercyhurst 2:  A four-goal outburst in the final 12 minutes, 40 seconds helped the Clarkson team recover from an early deficit and pick up its first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over sixth-ranked Mercyhurst  Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena  Lauren Dahm finished with 31 saves for Clarkson.  The Golden Knights went 2-for-9 on the power play while the Lakers were 1-for-4.

At Wayne State 6, Colgate 2:  The Raiders fell to Wayne State 6-2 last night at City Sports Center.  The Warriors were led by senior forward Sam Poyton who recorded her fourth career hat-trick.  Sophomore Hannah Milan and junior Beth Rotenberg netted goals for Colgate.  Lisa Plenderleith finished the game with 19 saves, while Lindsey Park turned away 28 for Wayne State.  Colgate finished 2-for-5 on the power play while the Warriors went 2-4. 

Cornell 7, at Vermont 1:  The Big Red defeated Vermont, 7-1, in its regular season opener Friday night.  Cornell's power play unit scored six goals in the win. Sophomore Rebecca Johnston led the Big Red with a goal and three assists, and junior Jenny Niesluchowski picked up the win in net making 20 saves.

No. 10/10 Connecticut 3, Princeton 0:  Connecticut scored three goals on 36 shots to shut out the Princeton 3-0 in the Tigers' season opener Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.  Princeton senior goaltender Kristen Young made 33 saves in the first game of the sea

At No. 9/9 St. Lawrence 5, Robert Morris 1:  Senior assistant captain Carson Duggan pulled to within one goal of the University's all-time record with a hat trick against Robert Morris Friday evening at Appleton Arena.  The Ma-Me-O Beach, Alberta native's three goals, along with a fantastic 30-save performance in net by junior Brittony Chartier, led the No. 9/9 Saints to a 5-1 win over the Colonials in the first ever meeting between the two teams.

At Rensselaer 5, Niagara 3:  The Engineers tallied two goals in the first and three in the second en route to a 5-3 victory over Niagara Friday night. Led by a goal and two assists from freshman Alisa Harrison, the Engineers improve to 2-4-0 on the season. The Purple Eagles fall to 0-7-0 overall.

At North Dakota 3, Union 0:  Union senior goaltender Lundy Day turned aside 41 North Dakota shots in a 3-0 loss at the Ralph Engelstad Arena Friday.  Day increased her career-save total to 1,264 and is within 70 saves of moving into the second spot on the College's all-time saves list.

At St. Cloud St. 3, Brown 0:   The Huskies dealt the Bears a 3-0 defeat to open the 2008-09 season Friday night.  Senior captain Nicole Stock turned in a terrific performance in net, recording 49 saves, but the offense was unable to capitalize on its three power play opportunities.

McGill 3, at Dartmouth 2 (Ex.):  The Big Green were edged by McGill, 3-2, in an exhibition game at Thompson Arena Friday night.  Dartmouth got goals from sophomore Larissa Roche and freshman Kelly Foley, while senior netminder Carli Clemis and junior Mariel Lacina combined to make 27 saves in the defeat.
