Weekend Update: Different Outcomes for Ranked Teams

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Two of the four nationally-ranked ECAC Hockey teams were victorious in league-play last evening.  No. 5/6 Dartmouth and No. 10 Clarkson each posted hard fought wins.  Princeton handed No. 4/4 St. Lawrence its first setback in league action, while No. 9/9 Harvard battled to a 5-5 overtime tie with Colgate. 

At Princeton 4, No. 4/4 St. Lawrence 2:  The Tigers pulled off a 4-2 upset over No. 4/4 St. Lawrence Friday evening at Baker Rink.  The Saints entered the game with an undefeated ECAC Hockey record and with one loss total.  Four different Tigers ended the game with two-point efforts.  The Saints outshot the Tigers by a 30-18 margin, allowing the home team only six shots on goal in the final 40 minutes of hockey.  However, Princeton would use three goals in the second period, including two power play tallies, to pick up the win.  Sophomore defender Sasha Sherry netted her fourth and fifth goals on the season for the Tigers.  Senior goaltender Kristen Young stopped 28 shots in the win for the Tigers, while St. Lawrence junior goalie Brittony Chartier recorded 14 saves in the loss.

At No. 5/6 Dartmouth 5, Cornell 4:  Senior co-captain Sarah Newnam tallied a career-high two goals, including the game-winner with 55 seconds remaining, as No. 5/6 Dartmouth erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to defeat Cornell, 5-4, Friday night.  Juniors Sarah Parsons and Jenna Cunningham, along with senior Maggie Kennedy also connected on goals, with Kennedy's coming by way of the shorthanded variety.  Senior goaltender Carli Clemis earned her fifth win of the season with 24 saves, including 13 in the second period.  Cornell dropped to 4-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in ECAC Hockey play.  Freshman forward Chelsea Karpenko led the way with two scores, while sophomore forward Rebecca Johnston posted a goal and two assists.  Sophomore Kayla Strong was in net for the Big Red making 25 stops with 10 of them coming in the final frame.

At No. 9/9 Harvard 5, Colgate 5 (ot):  Senior forward Sarah Vaillancourt tallied two goals and collected three assists and senior forwards Sarah Wilson and Jenny Brine each recorded a score and an assist as the No. 9/9 Harvard tied Colgate, 5-5 Friday evening at Bright Hockey Center.  Sophomore forward Hannah Milan recorded two goals for the Raiders, who bounced back from a 4-1 early second period deficit to earn the hard fought one point in league-play.  Colgate was 3-for-8 on the power play, while the Crimson were 0-for-11 on the power play.  Freshman Kimberly Sass recorded 36 saves to improve to 5-1-1 on the season for the Raiders, while senior netminder Brittany Martin and junior goaltender combined to make 22 saves.  The Crimson moves to 3-2-2 and 3-2-2 in ECAC Hockey, while the Raiders now own a 7-6-2 (2-2-1) record. 

Rensselaer 2 at Robert Morris 2 (ot):  The Engineers applied a blistering offense throughout the entire evening recording 58 shots on goal with two of them finding the back of the net in a 2-2 overtime tie at Robert Morris in non-conference action Friday night.  With the draw, the Engineers move to 7-5-2 on the season.  Rensselaer is now 6-1-2 in its last eight games, only surrendering over two goals once during the stretch.  The Engineers outshot the Colonials 58-18 on the evening, including a distinct advantage of shots in the second period by a count of 24-0.  The Engineers were backstopped by sophomore Sonja van der Bliek's 16 saves on the evening.  Senior defenseman Melissa Boik and freshman forward Alisa Harrison netted goals for Rensselaer. 

No. 10 Clarkson 2 at Quinnipiac 0:  Senior forward Marie-Jo Gaudet became just the second player in Clarkson University Women's Hockey team history to score 50 career goals as the Golden Knights downed Quinnipiac 2-0 in an ECAC Hockey match up Friday night at the TD Banknorth Sports Center.  Sophomore goaltender Lauren Dahm needed to post just 10 saves to record her third shutout in four games, while Tia Wishart was battered with 41 shots total, making 39 saves for the Bobcats.

Niagara 4 at Brown 2:  The Bears dropped a close game at Meehan Auditorium Friday night, losing a 4-2 decision to Niagara.  Sophomore Maggie Suprey and junior Nicole Brown each scored for Brown, but couldn't overcome the offense of the Purple Eagles.  With the loss, Brown falls to 2-6-1, while Niagara improves to 3-9-1 overall.  The Purple Eagles outshot the Bears 34-33.
