Weekend Update: Solid Goaltending Takes Down Unbeatens

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The North Country proved to be a tough place to visit, as national powers No. 3/3 Dartmouth and No. 4/4 Harvard each suffered road setbacks.  Home ice was favorable to other ECAC Hockey teams in league-action, as Cornell was the recipient of late overtime heroics and Colgate received streaky play between the pipes from its freshman goaltender.

At Clarkson 2, No. 4/4 Harvard 0:  Sophomore netminder Lauren Dahm made 35 saves, including 16 in the third period, to help the Clarkson hold off fourth-ranked Harvard 2-0 Friday night at Cheel Arena.  The Crimson, who were shut out for the first time since being eliminated in the NCAA playoffs in 2007 by eventual national champion Wisconsin, a stretch of 39 games, fell to 3-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in ECAC Hockey.  Clarkson finished the game trailing 35-20 in shots, including a 16-3 deficit in the final frame.  Sophomore forward Melissa Waldie and senior forward Marie-Jo Gaudet found the back of the net for Clarkson on the evening.  Harvard went scoreless in three power-play chances while Clarkson was 1-for-4.  Dahm finished with 35 saves and junior Christina Kessler had 18 for the Crimson.

At No. 8/9 St. Lawrence 3, No. 3/3 Dartmouth 0:  St. Lawrence senior forward Carson Duggan broke the school's goal record with the 86th of her career Friday night, and junior Brittony Chartier was solid between the pipes, to give the No. 8/9 Saints' 3-0 upset over No. 3/3 Dartmouth at Appleton Arena.  Though the Big Green finished with a slight 31-30 advantage in shots on goal, the Saints' used a 1-for-3 night on the power play to earn the victory.  Dartmouth was held without a power play tally, finishing 0-for-5 with the extra skater.  St. Lawrence improved to 6-1-2 overall and remained perfect in ECAC Hockey play at 3-0-0, while Dartmouth suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 5-1-0 (4-1-0).

At Colgate 4, Yale 2:  Junior forward Katie Stewart recorded two goals and freshman goaltender Kimberly Sass made 33 saves as the Colgate women's hockey team defeated Yale 4-2 Friday evening at Starr Rink.  With the win Sass became the first Colgate goaltender to record a win in her first five starts.  Junior forward Marissa Dumbovy's power-play goal at 11:56 of the second broke a 2-2 tie giving Colgate all it needed for the win.  The Raiders out-shot Yale 43-35 for the game. Sass made 33 saves in the win while sophomore goaltender Jackee Snikeris recorded 39 for Yale. Colgate finished 2-5 on the power play while the Bulldogs went 1-5.

At Cornell 3, Brown 2 (ot):  With less than eight seconds left in overtime, sophomore forward Karlee Overguard grabbed her own rebound to score the game-winning goal and send the Big Red past Brown, 3-2.  Sophomore forward Rebecca Johnston netted two goals for Cornell as the Big Red improved to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 ECAC Hockey.  Sophomore netminder Kayla Strong made 34 saves in net to drop Brown to 1-5-1 (1-4 ECAC Hockey) for the season.  Junior forward Andrea Hunter doubled her season point total by scoring both goals for Brown, while senior goaltender Nicole Stock notched 29 saves in the loss.

Vermont 3 at Quinnipiac 1:  Quinnipiac lost 3-1 to Vermont at the TD Banknorth Sports Center Friday night.  With the loss the Bobcats fall to 2-10-1 while the Catamounts improve to 3-8-0.  Freshman forward Chelsea Illchuk netted her first-career goal for the Bobcats.  Quinnipiac goaltenders Tia Wishart and Nanna Holm Glaas combined to stop 15 shots by Vermont.  Kristen Olychuck made 16 saves for the Catamounts.

No. 7/7 Boston University 2 at Princeton 0:  Boston University's senior forward Erin Seman's goal late in the first period proved to be enough as the Terriers defeated the Princeton 2-0 Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton outshot Boston University 30-27 but was unable to crack Terrier senior goaltender Allyse Wilcox, who made 30 saves for the shutout.  Both teams boasted perfect penalty kills as BU was 0-for-5 on the power play to snap a string of six straight games with a power-play goal and the Tigers were 0-for-6. Princeton fell to 2-5-0 with the loss.
