Dutchwomen Fall to Big Green
SCHENECTADY, NY - Freshman defenseman
Chelsey Heinhuis scored her first collegiate goal in the Union
women's hockey team's 4-2 loss to No. 9 Dartmouth on Saturday,
Jan. 31, at Messa Rink. Union drops to 2-23-3 overall
this season and 0-15-1 in ECAC Hockey games, while Dartmouth
improves to 14-6-2 with a 11-3-2 record in league play.
After going three games without giving up a first-period goal,
Union allowed the Big Green to score twice in the first 20 minutes.
Kelly Foley opened the scoring with a goal 11 minutes into the
game. Then, with 10.1 seconds on the clock, Sarah Parsons tipped a
shot from the point past Union netminder Lundy Day to give
Dartmouth a two-goal lead heading into the break.
Dartmouth added another two goals in the second period, but Union
got on the board as well. Jenna Cunningham extended the Big Green
lead to three 1:25 into the frame. Then, just past the game's
midpoint, Union took crashed the net on a power play. Dartmouth
goalie Mariel Lacina stopped two shots before Heinhuis slammed
home the rebound. The Big Green responded with a power-play goal of
their own three minutes later to take a 4-1 lead.
Union had the last word on offense as, halfway through the third
period, Emilie Arseneault skated in alone on Lacina and muscled the
puck into the right side of the net to make the scoreboard read
4-2.
Day made nine saves in the first period before she was replaced by
freshman Kate Gallagher after Dartmouth's third goal. Gallagher
made a career-high 23 stops over the rest of the game. Lacina
earned 15 saves to take the victory. Both teams finished
1-for-3 on the power play, and Dartmouth earned a 27-26 edge on
faceoffs.
The Dutchwomen head north for games against Clarkson and St.
Lawrence next weekend, Feb. 6-7.
