Raiders Upset No. 4 St. Lawrence
HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/31/09) -
Freshman goaltender Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) made 42
saves as the Colgate women's hockey team beat No. 4 St. Lawrence
3-1 Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink. The win extended the Raiders
ECAC Hockey unbeaten streak nine games and gave head coach Scott
Wiley his 100th career win.
Colgate (15-9-3, 9-4-3) scored three goals, one in each period
while Sass held the Saints scoreless for the first 47:26 to secure
the Raiders seventh win in January, another team record.
Colgate lit the lamp first, registering a tally at 12:47 in the
opening period to go on top 1-0. Senior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.)
sent the puck to corner boards after winning a face-off in the
Saints zone. Junior Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) was then able to
gain possession of the puck to wrap around the back off the net to
sneak one past St. Lawrence goaltender Brittony Chartier. Stewart's
goal was the 12th of the season to tie Hunt for the team lead.
Freshman Amanda Kirwan (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded the first goal
of her career in the second period to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.
Kirwan, who was positioned at the top of the slot, was able to send
the puck untouched through the high traffic in front of Chartier.
Senior Clancy Todd (Thorold, Ont.) and junior Beth Rotenberg
(Toronto, Ont.) were both credited with an assist.
St. Lawrence (18-6-3, 12-2-1) did not give up, however,
out-shooting the Raiders 20-6 in the closing period. Kristen Roach
scored off a rebound at 7:26 to close the gap 2-1. Sass, stood her
ground the rest of the game keeping Colgate's penalty kill a
perfect 7-for-7 for the fourth straight game.
Colgate would expanded its lead to 3-1 with an empty net goal 19:24
in the third. Junior Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) dumped
the puck in from center ice to secure coach Wiley's 100th career
win at Colgate.
St. Lawrence out-shot the Raiders 43-27. Colgate went 0-2 on the
power-play, while the Saints finished 0-7.
Colgate returns to action next weekend as it travels to Princeton
and Quinnipiac. The Raiders face-off against Princeton Friday, Feb.
6 at 7 p.m. and follow with Quinnipiac Saturday, Feb. 7 at 4 p.m.
