Harvard Strikes Three Times in Second, Holds Off Union
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Harvard women's hockey team scored three times in the second period, including twice in less than two minutes, to earn a 5-1 victory over Union Friday evening at Messa Rink. Katharine Chute tied her career-high with three points, scoring twice and collecting an assist, while Jenny Brine tallied one goal and also earned three assists. Randi Griffin and Cori Bassett also lit the lamp for the Crimson.
In a scoreless first period, Harvard's penalty-kill unit killed off two Union power plays, allowing the Dutchwomen to register only one shot on goal with an extra attacker. Union's Lauren Cromartie recorded that one shot, a chance through traffic from the slot, but Christina Kessler made a kick save with her left leg with five minutes left in the opening frame to keep the Dutchwomen off the scoreboard.
Harvard (9-7-3, 9-4-2 ECAC Hockey) had its own power-play opportunity late in the first, but also could not find the back of the net. The teams headed into the first intermission with the Crimson holding a commanding 14-2 lead in shots.
Brine won the opening faceoff in the second period, and the Crimson took control in the Union zone. Chute and Deborah Conway moved the puck back to Brine, who mustered a shot that got through Union's Lundy Day and into the netting, giving Harvard a 1-0 lead at 0:35.
The Crimson quickly tacked on another goal less than two minutes later at 2:33 as Griffin stuffed home a rebound from in front. Amy Uber fed a pass to Liza Ryabkina, who attempted a wraparound. Day made the initial save, but the puck bounced directly to Griffin's stick and the junior lifted it over the goaltender and into the top left corner.
After the Crimson and Dutchwomen were whistled for back-to-back penalties, Harvard increased its lead to 3-0 only 18 seconds later on the ensuing 4-on-4 chance when Chute found the back of the net on a backhand from the left of the slot. Brine tried to score from the right of the cage, but the puck deflected off Day and towards Chute. The sophomore forward grabbed possession and lifted the puck over Day's stick for the score.
The Dutchwomen capitalized on a power play late in the second to cut Harvard's lead to 3-1. Emilie Arseneault and Adelle Calahan played the puck in the Harvard end of the ice before finding Jackie Koetteritz behind the net. Koetteritz fought through a group of players in front and slid the puck past Kessler at 18:42.
After Union (2-22-3, 0-14-1) was called a hooking infraction early in the third, the Crimson managed its own power-play opportunity as Bassett scored on a one-timer at 5:59. Brine and Kati Vaughn each collected assists on the play, with Brine making a quick pass across the ice to Bassett. The junior defender took a slap shot from just inside the right circle to beat Day.
Harvard capped the scoring 4:08 remaining in the game, as Chute scored on a tip-in. Brine fired a shot that got through traffic and Chute picked up the rebound trickled the puck into the net. The Crimson led the final count in shots, 48-6, and also held a strong advantage in faceoffs, 32-19.
Kessler made five saves to earn her seventh win of the season, while Day recorded 43 shots for Union.
Harvard, winner of three straight, will visit Rensselaer Saturday afternoon with the game slated to begin at 4 p.m.
