Dartmouth Drops Overtime Decision to Colgate
HANOVER, N.H. - Despite four points from
junior Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.), including her first hat trick
of the season, the Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to Colgate,
7-6, in an overtime heartbreaker to go down 1-0 in the
best-of-three series.
For Dartmouth (16-9-4), sophomore Amanda
Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) posted a pair of goals and assists for four
points, while senior Maggie
Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) handed out three assists. The Big
Green also had three players with a couple of assists. Senior
netminder Carli
Clemis (Taber, Alta.) suffered the overtime loss, making 25
saves.
For Colgate (19-12-3), Jessi Waters added two goals, including the
game-winner, while Sam Hunt tallied four points on a goal and three
assists. Katie Stewart recorded three assists in the win, while
Kimberly Sass earned her first postseason victory with 32
saves.
Right from the beginning, the first period and the game showed
signs of it not being a defensive battle. The two teams combined
for six goals in the opening frame with four coming from Colgate as
the Raiders posted a 4-2 lead.
Colgate wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Beth Rotenberg
gave the Raiders a quick 1-0 lead just 1:28 into the period. She
capitalized on a Big Green turnover in the offensive zone and
skated in all alone on Clemis. Rotenberg went in on the backhand
and switched to the forehand and beat Clemis five-hole.
Dartmouth evened the score at the 14:18 mark of the period as
senior co-captain Sarah
Newnam (Clifton, Va.) fired a shot on net that was blocked and
Parsons collected the rebound and beat Sass to the near post for
her 11th of the season. For Newnam it was one of two assists on the
afternoon.
Laura Jansen and Hunt fired back for the Colgate with back-to-back
goals to push the lead up 3-1 in favor of the Raiders.
The Big Green answered the call again with a power play goal to cut
the deficit back to one on Trunzo's 10th of the season on the man
advantage and her team-leading 18th on the year. Senior Julia
Bronson (Arlington, Va.) put a shot on net that Sass saved, but
again she couldn't control the rebound and Trunzo was there for the
clean up. Bronson was one of three skaters with two assists.
The Raiders increased the lead back to two with a power play goal
of their own coming with 8:24 left in the period. Kiira Dosdall
scored her fifth of the season with the assists going to Katie
Stewart and Hunt.
In the second period, Dartmouth came roaring back with a pair of
power play goals from Parsons to give her the hat trick on the
afternoon. Early in the frame, Parson got a pass from Kennedy and
took a shot from the left circle. The shot then got redirected off
of a Colgate skate and inside the far post for the score to make it
4-3.
She knotted the scored at 4-4 after a nice rush up ice by Trunzo
and senior co-captain Shannon
Bowman (Leamington, Ont.). Bowman found a streaking Trunzo at the
blueline and she skated in and pushed a pass over to Parsons, who
tipped the puck in at the top of the crease to tie the game.
Bowman, like Newnam and Kennedy, finished with two helpers.
The Big Green's momentum didn't stay long as the Raiders took back
the lead at 5-4 on a goal by Elin Brown. Evan Minnick took the puck
behind the net and put a shot on Clemis that deflected out to Brown
and she hit the open net for the lead.
Dartmouth began the final period with a spark coming from
Cunningham. She evened the score at 5-5 with her 11th of the
season. Kennedy put a shot on Sass and like most goals in the game,
Cunningham was camped out in front and beat Sass for the score.
Waters took the lead back for Coglate at 6-5, beating Clemis under
the blocker from the left circle.
With the outlook looking grim for the Big Green and the extra
skater on the ice, Trunzo tipped home the game-tying goal with 13
seconds remaining to force the game into overtime. Newnam took a
shot from the point and the puck deflected into the top of the net
to tie the game.
The Raiders pressured the Big Green right from the beginning of
overtime. Colgate earned a couple of open opportunities and on the
second chance Waters gave the Raiders the 7-6 overtime win. She
received a pass in stride from Clancy Todd and beat Clemis between
the pads for the victory.
Dartmouth finished the night with three power play goals in five
chances and outshot the Raiders by a 38-32 margin.
The Big Green will look to even the series tomorrow afternoon as
the two teams do battle at 2 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
