Raiders Hand Bulldogs Home Loss
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Colgate goalie Kimberly Sass made 28 saves,
including 16 in the third period, as the Raiders beat Yale 3-0
Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Rink. Freshman goalie Genny Ladiges
made 18 saves for the Bulldogs.
Yale (8-12-0, 4-9-0 ECAC Hockey) had a chance to get on the
scoreboard two minutes in on a two-on-one, but senior forward
Danielle Kozlowski's full-extension tip attempt of a cross from
senior forward Crysti Howser went just wide, and Kozlowski and the
defender on her went crashing into the net.
Ladiges made a quick kick save on a shot by forward Hannah Milan
three minutes in, then denied the rebound. But a penalty on the
Bulldogs right after that sequence enabled Colgate (14-9-2, 8-4-2
ECAC Hockey) to take the lead. Junior defenseman Alyssa Clarke
blocked a pair of shots early in the penalty kill, but the Raiders
later caught the Bulldogs on a line change. Forward Sam Hunt got
the puck across the ice to forward Katie Stewart for a wide-open
slap shot from the left point. Ladiges got a piece of Stewart's
shot, sending it up into the air, but forward Elin Brown was able
to knock it in for a 1-0 lead at 4:22.
The Bulldogs spent a lot of time in the Colgate zone but could not
get shots on Sass. Senior forward Maggie Westfal's shot 13 minutes
in was just Yale's second shot on goal, and Sass stopped it. There
were two scoring chances for Yale in the waning moments of the
period, when Howser caused a turnover in the Colgate zone and got
the puck to freshman defenseman Heather Grant for a slap shot. Sass
blocked Grant's shot, and the rebound popped into the air
momentarily before Sass gloved it. Clarke then sent a slap shot
wide as time expired.
Yale generated some offensive momentum early in the second period
with an extended delayed penalty, controlling the puck in the
Colgate zone for half a minute with Ladiges pulled. Shortly after
the Raiders finally touched the puck to start the penalty, freshman
forward Aleca Hughes just missed knocking in a cross-ice pass from
Grant.
The next Yale power play took a turn for the worse when the
Bulldogs lost the puck in their own zone, giving Hunt the chance to
skate in all alone on Ladiges and net her 12th goal of
the season at the 13:38 mark.
The Bulldogs had another power play late in the period, but Sass
made a nice save with her left leg on a deceptive backhand from in
front by Clarke. The Raiders led 2-0 heading into the third.
Forward Katie Stewart extended the lead to 3-0 at 6:01 of the
third. The Bulldogs had one last chance to climb back in the game
when they went on their fifth power play with just under 12 minutes
remaining, but Sass made a nice save on a deflection attempt by
Howser. Yale would finish the period with 16 shots on goal (after
getting only 12 in the first two periods combined) while limiting
the Raiders to just four shots on goal.
A pair of penalties on the Bulldogs in the final five minutes
negated any chance of generating offensive momentum. The last one
very nearly led to another goal for the Raiders, as a long pass
found forward Beth Rotenberg on a breakaway, but Ladiges came out
to make the save.
Yale plays at Princeton next Friday at 7:00 p.m.
