Sass' Shutout Gives Colgate Six Straight Wins
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (1/24/09) - Freshman
goaltender Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) made 28 saves for her
first career shutout and senior forward Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.)
recorded three points as the Colgate women's hockey team beat Yale
3-0 Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Rink. The win extended the
Raiders winning streak to a record six games.
Colgate (14-9-2, 8-4-2) who is tied with Harvard for third scored
three goals, one power-play, one shorthanded and one even strength
while Sass held the Bulldogs scoreless to secure the second
straight shutout for the Raiders. The back-to-back shutout's is the
first for Colgate since Jan. 26-27, 2007.
Colgate lit the lamp early, registering a tally at 4:22 in the
opening period to go on top 1-0. Yale thought they had cleared the
puck from its zone during a Raider power-play and was in the middle
of the line change, but Hunt saved the puck on the blue line and
centered to junior Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) who wristed a hard
shot towards Yale goaltender Genny Ladiges. Senior Elin Brown
(Calgary, Alta.) crashed the net and deflected the rebound in for
the score. Hunt would record Colgate's second shorthanded
goal off the weekend in the second period to give the Raiders a
2-0. Hunt again caught the Bulldogs in a line change and was able
to beat Ladiges on a breakaway for her 12th goal of the season. For
Hunt this was her 70th career goal making her the first Colgate
player during the division I era to record 70 goals and 60 assists.
With three points on the night Hunt also extended her current
scoring streak to 10 points in six games.
Colgate expanded its lead to 3-0 with an even strength goal 6:01 in
the third. Stewart received a nice feed from Hunt on the crease to
collect her second point of the contest. Brown also assisted on the
goal giving the Raiders front line all seven points of the game.
Yale (8-12-0, 4-9) did not give up, however, out-shooting
the Raiders 16-4 in the closing period. Sass, came within five
seconds of a shutout last weekend, and stood her ground the entire
game keeping Colgate's penalty kill a perfect 5-for-5 for the
second straight game. Yale out-shot the Raiders
28-21. Colgate went 1-5 on the power-play, while the Bulldogs
finished 0-5.
Colgate returns to action next weekend as it hosts in-state rivals
Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The Raiders face-off against Clarkson
Friday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. and follow with St. Lawrence Saturday,
Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. Saturday's game will be covered live on Time
