Bowman's 100th Point Not Enough for Big Green

HANOVER, N.H. -  ­ Senior co-captain Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) made her senior night a one to remember with two points, including a third period goal to give her 100 career points, but the eighth-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to seventh-ranked St. Lawrence, 4-3, in the Big Green's final regular-season game.

With the loss and wins by both Harvard and Princeton, Dartmouth drew the fourth seed in the upcoming ECAC Hockey Tournament and will host the fifth-seeded Colgate Raiders in a best-of-three series beginning on Friday. Times on the games will be announced on Monday.

For Dartmouth (16-8-4, 13-5-4 ECAC Hockey), Bowman led the way with her two points, while freshmen Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.) and Moira Scanlon (Chicago, Ill.) tallied the Big Green's other two goals. Senior Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) made her final regular season start between the pipes and pushed aside 21 shots in the loss.

For St. Lawrence (22-9-3, 15-5-1 ECAC Hockey), Tara Akstull factored in three goals for the Saints with a goal and two assists, while Marianna Locke collected two assists. Goaltender Brittony Chartier earned the win, making 25 stops in net. 

In a scoreless first period that saw a lot of neutral zone play, each team didn't see significant scoring chances and both failed on power play opportunities. Dartmouth outshot St. Lawrence 8-4 in the opening frame.

The two teams made up for the lack of offense in the opening frame as they combined to score four goals in the second period. St. Lawrence got things started with a goal 2:50 into the period as Vanessa Emond tallied her fifth goal of the season on the power play. Akstull beat the Dartmouth defense on a 2-on-2 situation and found Emond at the far post and she beat a sprawled out Clemis for the 1-0 lead.

The Saints increased their lead to 2-0 just 1:26 after taking the first lead of the game. Akstull was the catalyst again as Michelle Zimmerman put a shot on net that was blocked and Akstull was there for the clean-up inside the far post for her 13th of the year.

Dartmouth got one back with 4:50 remaining on Scanlon's third goal of the season. Senior co-captain Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) won the face-off back to classmate Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) slid the puck to Scanlon, who fired a high slap shot that beat Chartier on the glove side.

St. Lawrence added its third of the night as Karell Emard drove to the net, put a shot on Clemis. She was unable to control the shot and Lisa Batchelor swooped in and beat Clemis top shelf for the 3-0 lead, going into the final period.

Brtini Smith then added the eventual game-winner midway through the third period with the assists going to Akstull and Kyrsten Venasse to push the lead to 4-0.

Dartmouth, however, didn't go quietly and after last night's comeback against Clarkson the Big Green had believers.

Fischer got Dartmouth back to with in two goals with her 12th of the season on the power play. Senior co-captain Sarah Newnam (Clifton, Va.) fired a shot from the point and the rebound kicked out to Fischer and she beat Chartier to the near post to make it 4-2.

With 3:24 remaining in the game, Bowman tallied her 100th career point with a goal during a scrum infront of the net. Junior Sarah Parsons was on the play and got the assist. Unfortunately, the Big Green didn't get any closer as St. Lawrence skated out the clock in the defensive end.

Dartmouth netted one power play goal in five opportunities, while the Saints earned one goal on the man advantage in four chances. The Big Green finished the night outshooting St. Lawrence by a 28-25 margin.

Following the game, Dartmouth honored its seven graduating seniors, which included Bowman, Newnam, Bronson, Clemis, Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.), Katie Gray (Calgary, Alta.) and Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.).
