Chartier, No. 5 Saints Blank Bulldogs
CANTON, NY - Junior goaltender Brittony Chartier made 35 saves, while four different Saints each scored a goal as the No. 5 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team blanked Yale 4-0 at Appleton Arena on Saturday afternoon. Senior Jordan Pyers logged her first goal of the season in the victory, while first-year student Alley Bero picked up her first collegiate game-winner.
The Saints (14-5-3, 8-1-1) kept their dominant streak against Yale intact, as they've won the last 24 meetings with the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Yale fell to 7-11-0 (3-8-0) on the season, despite a solid performance in net by Genny Ladiges.
"For the second straight game, I very happy with the intensity we brought to the rink and with our entire team's effort," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells, whose team improved to 10-1-1 on their home ice. "Yale is a dangerous team with a lot of talent, but Brittony (Chartier) was sharp tonight and our goals proved to be momentum changers."
The game was only scoreless for 34 seconds, as Bero collected her ninth goal of the season on the opening shift of the contest in what would stand up as the game-winner. The Akwesasne, NY native lifted a soft backhander over Ladiges' glove off of a pass by sophomore Karell Emard for the early goal. Senior assistant captain Carson Duggan also picked up a helper on the opening tally.
Ladiges seemed to settle in after allowing the first goal, making 13 saves in the opening 20 minutes to keep the score at 1-0. However, Chartier was up to the challenge, making eight first period saves to keep Yale off the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs would take control of the offensive pressure in the second period, as they began to pile up shots against the home team. Leading the shot count 15-2 at one point, Yale's Heather Grant had a wide open net from the slot as Chartier found herself out of position. However, Grant's bid sailed just wide of the far post, keeping the game at 1-0. Chartier would later stone Danielle Kozlowski on a short-handed breakaway try, making one of her 20 second period stops.
Despite being out-shot 20-11 in the second period, it was the Saints who would tack on two insurance goals to take a 3-0 lead into the third period. Senior captain Marianna Locke scored her seventh goal of the season at 12:12 of the second, as she re-directed a slap shot by junior Courtney Sawchuk between Ladiges' pads for a 2-0 lead. Junior defenseman Britni Smith made it 3-0 4:04 later when her slap shot on the power play bounced off of Ladiges' and over the goalie's shoulder and across the goal line for a 3-0 cushion. The goal was Smith's fourth of the season, and was assisted by senior Alison Domenico, who also had a helper on Locke's tally.
Though Yale tried to create chances in front of Chartier, the Saskatoon, SK native held her ground and completed her fourth shutout of the year with a seven-save period. Pyers, who has made a sound transition to defense for St. Lawrence, would put the game out of reach with her first of the season at 12:46 of the third. She completed a nice two-on-one try with classmate Lisa Batchelor by burying a wrist shot past Ladiges to complete the scoring at 4-0.
The Saints finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while Yale was 0-for-4 but held a 35-33 advantage in shots on goal. Chartier improved to 14-5-3 on the season, while Ladiges made 29 saves but fell to 2-6-0.
St. Lawrence, who picked up four critical points in the ECAC Hockey standings, will have a quick turnaround this week as they will take on their archrivals, Clarkson University, on Wednesday, January 21. The game will begin at 7:00pm at Appleton Arena.
