Late Goal Gives Saints Win Over Brown
CANTON, NY -- Senior assistant captain Carson Duggan scored her 15th goal of the season, the 94th of her career, at 9:28 of the third period to lift the No. 5 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team past Brown University by the score of 3-2 on Friday night at Appleton Arena. The Saints (13-5-3, 7-1-1) outshot the visitors by a wide 41-20 margin, winning their 10th straight against the Bears (3-13-1, 2-8-0).
A trio of Saints collected a goal and an assist in the game, including Duggan, sophomore Karell Emard and rookie Alley Bero. Brown's Andrea Hunter also picked up a goal and a helper in a losing effort, while senior goaltender Nicole Stock put forth a valiant 38-save effort to keep the Bears in the game late.
"I was very pleased with the full effort by our entire team, and our power play unit came up with a big goal to get us a win," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells, whose team improved to 12-0-0 when leading after the second period. "Brittony (Chartier) came up with some huge saves down the stretch, and I was impressed with Brown as they played hard and had a few bids at the end to tie it up."
The Scarlet and Brown dominated play throughout the first 20 minutes of the game, as they consistently put pressure on Stock and the defense in front of her. Emard finally broke the game's scoring open with her eighth goal of the year at 16:49 of the first period when she took a pass from Bero at the goal mouth and stuffed it behind Stock for a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead.
Despite finishing with a 19-2 advantage in shots on goal in the opening stanza, Stock's 18 saves would keep them in the contest. Though the Bears could not solve Chartier in the first, the opened the second period in style with a goal only 3:57 into the frame. Leah Crabtree picked up her first collegiate goal by pouncing on a rebound to Chartier's left off of a shot by Hunter. Katelyn Landry also picked up an assist on the tying goal.
After rookies Josee Belanger and Vanessa Emond narrowly missed with shots that hit the post, St. Lawrence would reclaim their one goal lead at 8:47 of the second period when Bero scored her eighth of the season. Duggan got the play started, as she found Emard open behind the net. The Richelieu, QC native then centered a pass to Bero in the slot for a one-timer that beat Stock for a 2-1 lead. The goal capped the scoring in the period, which saw the home team out-shoot their opponents 14-7 in the frame.
Brown would storm out of the gate again and tie the game at 2-2 only 40 seconds into the third period. Maggie Suprey picked up her third assist of the year by finding Hunter on the doorstep, who beat Chartier for her fourth goal of the year and give the Bears the momentum.
With the two teams playing very even hockey midway through the third period, Brown's Jenna Dancewicz was called for only her team's second minor penalty of the night at 9:22. The faceoff to Stock's left was won by senior captain Marianna Locke, who advanced the puck to classmate Alison Domenico. Her pass found Duggan cutting through the crease for a tic-tac-toe goal and a 3-2 lead a mere six seconds into the power play.
Needing a goal to force overtime, Brown began to pour on the offensive pressure in the later stages of the period. Chartier robbed Hunter at the top of the crease to protect her lead with 2:41 to play in regulation. After a timeout, the Bears opted to pull Stock for the extra attacker and had several tight chances fall by the wayside. On their last bid with two seconds left, a Brown defenseman's slap shot from the blue line was blocked by Domenico, who sprawled out to preserve the 3-2 victory.
Chartier finished with 18 saves, including 10 in the third period, to improve to 13-5-3 on the year while Stock finished with 38 saves, but fell to 3-13-1. St. Lawrence managed to net the only power play goal on the evening, finishing 1-for-2 with the extra skater while Brown was 0-for-2.
St. Lawrence will look to sweep the conference weekend tomorrow, Saturday, January 20 when they take on Yale University. The puck is set to drop on the Saints and Bulldogs at 4:00pm.
