Raiders Skate Past In-State Rival RPI
HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/16/09) - Freshman goaltender Kimberly Sass
(East Amherst, N.Y.) made 35 saves and junior forward Katie Stewart
(Exeter, Ont.) recorded two-points including the eventual game
winning goal as the Colgate University women's hockey team beat
in-state rival Rensselaer 3-2 Friday night at Starr Rink.
Colgate (11-9-2, 5-4-2) scored three power-play goals, two in the
first period and one in the second while Sass made 14 saves in the
closing period to secure the Raiders third straight conference win.
Senior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) openedthe scoring with a
power-play goal 14:03 into the game off a nice feed from senior
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.). Dosdall received the puck at the
high slot from Stewart and immediately served it over to Hunt who
sent a one-timer whistling past Rensselaer goaltender Sonja Van der
Bliek's left ear. For Hunt that was her third goal in as many games
and her team high 10th goal of the season.
Junior Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) topped Hunt's scoring streak
by recording her third goal in the last two games at the 16:43 mark
to extend the Raiders lead to 2-0. Rotenberg's power-play goal was
assisted by sophomore Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) and junior
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.).
Stewart netted her ninth goal of the season and eighth in the last
12-games at 6:29 into the second to give Colgate a 3-0 lead.
Stewart's power-play goal was assisted by Dosdall and senior Elin
Brown (Calgary, Alta.). Rensselaer would answer back at the 13:23
mark with an even strength goal from Nicole McDonald to trim the
Raiders lead to 3-1 through two-periods.
Rensselaer (11-8-3, 6-3-2) opened the third period with a
power-play goal from Sydney O'Keefe at 2:46 to thin the margin to
3-2. Colgate was able to kill off three straight power-plays over
an eight minute span to grab control of the game. The Engineers
pulled their goalie in the closing minute, but it wasn't enough as
Sass made a couple saves in the closing seconds for her seventh win
of the season.
Rensselaer out-shot the Raiders 37-32. Colgate went 3-6 on the
power-play as the Engineers went 1-10. Sass made 35 saves for the
Raiders, while Van der Bliek made 29 for Rensselaer.
