Princeton Surprises Saints
CANTON, N.Y. -- The Princeton women's hockey
team scored a pair of second period power-play goals and senior
goaltender Kristin Young made 12 of her 21 saves in the third
period as the Tigers defeated sixth-ranked St. Lawrence 2-1 at
Appleton Arena Saturday afternoon.
Princeton, 16-9-2, 13-6-1, completed a season sweep of the Saints
who fall to 21-8-3 overall and 15-4-1 in ECAC play. Princeton
gained two points on Colgate in the fight for home ice in the ECAC
playoffs. Princeton will clinch home ice with two points in next
weekend's set of games against Brown and Yale.
The Saints led 1-0 after one period as senior Alison Domenico
tipped a shot by defenseman Britni Smith on a power play at 9:47
and while Young got her pads on the shot, it trickled over the goal
line with Marianna Locke also assisting.
The Princeton power play cashed in twice in the second period to
produce the Tiger win. Senior Katherine
Dineen scored her sixth of the season when she collected a rebound
of a shot by Christine
Foster and tucked it past Saint goalie Brittony Chartier at 6:11
and Foster came through with the eventual game winner when she
picked up a loose puck in front after a save on a shot by Dineen
and tucked the rebound away for her sixth of the year at 12:46.
The Saints, outshot 29-10 through two periods, turned up the
pressure in the third and while they created some great scoring
chances, they couldn't cash in. Young came up with a series of big
saves and SLU had other shots sail just high or wide in their bid
to tie the game. SLU had a power play in the final minute of the
game with Chartier out for an extra attacker, but Princeton's Annie
Greenwood came up with two big defensive plays and the Tigers were
able to run out the clock for the victory.
The Saints went one for six on the power play in Saturday's game
while Princeton was two for three. Chartier finished with 31 saves
for the Saints.
Princeton visits Brown next Friday night.
