Wilson’s Goal Lifts Harvard

Boxscore

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Sarah Wilson tallied a goal with 3:05 remaining in the third period to propel the Harvard women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory at Colgate Saturday afternoon.  Christina Kessler made 26 saves, including one on a penalty shot in the third, and Jenny Brine chipped in with her second goal in two games.

The Crimson (15-8-3, 14-4-2 ECAC Hockey) struck first on a tally by Brine late in the opening frame at 17:18.  Nora Sluzas passed the puck to Katharine Chute in the Colgate zone and Chute shot it at goaltender Kimberly Sass, creating a rebound toward the right side.  Brine picked up the puck and lifted it over Sass's shoulder and into the top corner of the net.

Harvard mustered 13 shots in the first, while holding the Raiders to only six chances.

With four minutes gone by in the second period, Colgate's Sam Hunt created a breakaway and skated in alone on Kessler.  Hunt, battling Harvard defender Jen Brawn, tried to go right, but Kessler made a kick save to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard.  In the final minute of play in the stanza, Marissa Dombovy fed Clancy Todd a pass from the left corner.  Todd accepted the puck in the slot, but her one-timer went wide of Kessler and the net.

The Crimson headed into the second intermission with its 1-0 lead intact, and held a 24-13 advantage in shots on goal through two.  Harvard killed off four Colgate opportunities with an extra attacker in the second, stretching the Crimson's streak of not allowing an opponent to score on the power play to 31 straight chances.

The Raiders knotted the game in the opening minutes of the third.  Jessi Waters controlled the puck to Kessler's right and skated behind the net before tossing a pass in front.  Hannah Milan fought through traffic and slipped a shot past Kessler at 2:27.

At 11:27, Milan stole a pass near the Crimson blue line and carried the puck alone on Kessler. However, before she was able to get a shot off, Milan was taken down by Kathryn Farni and awarded a penalty shot.  Milan grabbed the puck at center ice and skated down the middle on the ensuing penalty shot.  She tried to sneak a shot between Kessler's legs, but the Crimson netminder denied her attempt, keeping the game even.

Around a minute later, Colgate (17-11-3, 11-6-3) was called for back-to-back penalties, giving the Crimson a 5-on-3 chance for 82 seconds.  Harvard got several shots on net, including one by Cori Bassett from the right of the crease that forced Sass to make a diving stop, but the Crimson was not able to get one through with two extra attackers.

With 3:05 remaining in regulation, Wilson put Harvard ahead for good with a rebound shot from the slot that slid underneath Sass and a Colgate defender into the middle of the net.  Anna McDonald was credited with the primary assist after putting the original shot on net, while Kate Buesser earned the secondary assist.

The Crimson will return to Bright Hockey Center to face New Hampshire Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
