Raiders' Third-Period Assault Too Much for Cornell
HAMILTON, N.Y.-The Big Red women's ice hockey
team lost 4-3 to Colgate on Sunday afternoon at Starr Rink. The
Raiders notched three goals in the third period to edge past
Cornell. Cornell moves to 7-8-2 overall and 3-5-2 in ECAC
Hockey.
The Big Red went on the power play at 7:00 minutes into the first
period off a cross-checking penalty to Clancy Todd. Fifteen seconds
into the penalty Laura Danforth fed the puck from outside of the
circles to sophomore Karlee Overguard . Overguard scored top shelf
over goaltender Lisa Plederleith's shoulder.
Freshman Chelsea Karpenko put the Big Red up by two when she scored
at 12:13 of the first period. Overguard and Danforth assisted on
the goal.
The game was paused in order to review a scoring chance by the Big
Red's Liz Zorn. Cornell thought that Zorn's shot crossed the goal
line, but after review the referees did not count the shot as a
goal.
The Raiders came out hard after the delay, and Beth Rotherberg put
her team on the board for the first time at 13:16 of the first
period. Rotherberg slid the puck through Niesluchowski's legs.
Amanda Kirwan assisted on the goal.
The two teams skated to a scoreless second period.
At 4:02 of the third period, the Raiders gained an extra attacker
after a delayed Cornell penalty. Evan Minnick took advantage
scoring Colgate's second goal of the game.
At 5:12 of the third period, the Raiders put on the pressure in the
Big Red defensive zone. Sam Hunt found Katie Stewart on the left
side of the Cornell net. Stewart slid the puck across to Todd who
gave Colgate its first lead of the game.
Colgate lengthened its lead to two at 9:57 of the third period.
Jessi Waters picked the puck up off the stick of a Big Red
defender. Waters skated the length of the ice and found Rotenberg
who scored on the left side of the net.
Karpenko had a great scoring chance at 5:40 of the third period.
She let go a huge slap shot that looked to have bounced off both
posts of the Raiders' goal. The referee stopped the game to review
the goal and awarded Karpenko her second goal of the game. Karlee
Overguard and Laura Danforth assisted on the goal.
The Big Red pulled Niesluchowski with 1:15 left in the game in
favor of an extra attacker. Cornell created numerous scoring
chances but could not get the puck past Plenderleith.
Niesluchowski made 36 saves in net for the Big Red, while
Plenderleith made 26 saves in the win.
The Big Red will return to action next weekend when it will play
host to Union and Rensselaer.
