Saints Fall Short in Weekend Sweep Bid
CANTON, NY -- The No. 5 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team was unable to come up with a weekend sweep of No. 7 Boston College on Saturday afternoon, as the Eagles got two goals from Allie Thunstrom and a solid goaltending performance by Molly Schaus to earn a 4-1 victory at Appleton Arena.
The Eagles moved to 13-5-3 (7-3-1) on the season thanks to their solid penalty killing effort, which kept
St. Lawrence in check at 0-for-8 with the extra skater. The Saints (12-5-3, 6-1-1) received a solid outing between the pipes by junior Brittony Chartier, but her 34 saves were not enough to lead the Scarlet and Brown to a win.
"They really came out firing early and got a quick goal, but I thought we started to chip our way back into it midway through the first period," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "They're a very good team. They can beat you with offense, defense or goaltending. Tonight, it was our inability to put the puck in the net on the power play that did us in."
Boston College wasted little time in grabbing a 1-0 lead when Meghan Fardelmann scored only 3:49 into the game. After the Eagles won a face-off to Chartier's right, Fardelmann fired a high wrist shot that deflected off of the goaltender's blocker and into the goal for her sixth tally of the season.
Though the visitors had all of the momentum in the early going by taking an 8-0 lead in shots on goal,
St. Lawrence would answer with a barrage of shots on a pair of power plays to put some pressure on Schaus. However, the goaltender flashed her talents by robbing both rookie Alley Bero and sophomore Karell Emard on the same shift to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Boston College after the first period.
St. Lawrence continued to work hard offensively and earned several quality scoring tries on Schaus that the netminder was able to turn away. It took a bit of good fortune for the home team to net the tying goal at 7:27 of the second period. Senior Jordan Pyers sent the puck to classmate Carson Duggan inside the circle to Schaus' left. Duggan fired a one-timer that deflected off of an Eagles' defenseman's stick and high up into the air. Schaus lifted her glove to catch the puck out of midair, but before she could, it bounced off of Emard's helmet in front of the crease and into the goal for her seventh of the season to tie the score at 1-1.
Boston College, which argued that the goal was actually touched by a high stick, did not get rattled by the tying goal and came right back only 2:22 later to reclaim their lead at 2-1. With her team skating on a 4-on-3 power play, Thunstrom made a great individual effort by snagging her own rebound and firing it behind Chartier at 9:49 for her 11th of the season.
St. Lawrence's best opportunity to tie the score again in the second period came when they had 1:27 of a 5-on-3 power play with just over five minutes to play in the frame. However, Schaus and her defense kept a tight triangle in front of the crease and allowed for no rebounds, frustrating the Saints and clinging to a one-goal lead after 40 minutes.
The Eagles would pick up a crucial insurance goal at 7:09 of the third period that really put St. Lawrence's back against the wall. Becky Zavisza fired a shot on Chartier, and though the goalie made the save, Fardelmann tipped the loose puck to Stephanie Olchowski near the right post and she was able to tap it across the goal line for her first of the season and a 3-1 Boston College advantage.
The Saints would again have a lengthy 5-on-3 power play midway through the third period, and after a timeout, Coach Wells opted to pull Chartier for a 6-on-3 try. Again, it was Schaus who came through with save after save to protect her team's lead. Chartier was in and out of the net consistently in the period, and with her on the bench in favor of the extra skater, Thunstrom would put the game away with an empty net goal at 17:26 and cap the scoring at 4-1.
The game proved to be another highly contested meeting, as the Saints narrowly outshot the Eagles, 39-38. The visitors finished 1-of-3 on the power play, helping Schaus improve to 13-4-3 on the year after a 38-save afternoon. Chartier made 34 saves, including 14 in the third period, but falls to 12-5-3.
This afternoon's game was the final non-conference contest of the season for St. Lawrence, who will now turn their focus on to their ECAC Hockey regular season schedule. The Saints will welcome Brown and Yale to Canton, NY next weekend for a pair of conference games, beginning with the Bears on Friday, January 16 at 7:00pm.
