Shorthanded Goal All the Offense Needed by Harvard

Boxscore

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kathryn Farni scored a shorthanded goal midway through the second period, and Christina Kessler made 32 saves for her second shutout of the season to lead the Harvard women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over archrival Yale at Ingalls Rink Saturday afternoon.

The Crimson penalty-kill unit was a perfect 7-for-7 in the contest, as Harvard (8-7-3, 8-4-2 ECAC Hockey, 5-2-0 Ivy League) earned its second win on the weekend.

Midway through the first, Harvard was whistled for three consecutive penalties, giving the Bulldogs a two-skater advantage for 2:16.  Yale kept possession of the puck for almost the entirety of the power play, but Kessler covered up twice enabling Harvard to kill the first two infractions.  With four skaters on the ice, the Crimson defense shut down Yale for the remainder of the power play, keeping the game scoreless entering the first intermission.

Due in part to its three power-play chances in the first, Yale led, 12-9, in shots through one.

In the second, the Crimson was called for a major penalty for checking from behind at 8:34, giving the Bulldogs another lengthy power play, this time for five minutes.  Harvard once again stepped up on special teams, killing the first 3:04 before Farni notched her third goal of the season, coming unassisted.  Farni grabbed a loose puck in the Yale zone and skated from left to right across the left faceoff circle.  The junior defender aimed at the right side of the net and took a wrist shot that went over Yale's Jackee Snikeris's glove and into the cage for a shorthanded goal at 11:38.

Kessler stood tall for the remainder of Yale's five minute power play, making six saves in all with a skater down to keep the Bulldogs off the board.  Through two periods of play, Kessler and the Crimson defense killed all six Yale power plays, as the junior netminder recorded 22 saves after the first 40 minutes of action.

Kessler continued her strong play in the third, stopping a backhand shot by Alec Hughes from the doorstep at 3:58.  Sarah Vaillancourt had a similar chance for Harvard a minute later, but the shot hit Snikeris's chest and she covered up.

Yale (7-9-0, 3-6-0, 1-3-0) recorded six more shots on goal in the third period and tried to pull Snikeris in the final minutes, but Harvard kept possession in the Bulldogs' zone.  Snikeris was finally able to get to the bench with 33 seconds remaining, and Yale managed one finally shot by Bray Ketchum, but Kessler made the stop to clinch the win and the shutout for Harvard.

The Bulldogs outshot the Crimson, 10-6, in the final frame and led 32-25 in that category for the game.  The Crimson finished 0-for-5 on the power play.

Harvard will have a 20-day break for its exam period before visiting Union Friday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
