Cornell Battles Princeton To Tie
PRINCETON, N.J.-The Big Red women's hockey team
picked up its second tie of the weekend on Saturday evening with a
2-2 deadlock against Princeton in ECAC Hockey action. Freshman
Chelsea Karpenko and freshman Catherine White each scored for
Cornell, while freshman goaltender Amanda Mazzotta made 21 saves.
The Big Red improves to 11-10-4 overall and 7-7-4 in league
action.
The Cornell line of Johnston, Karpenko and Catherine White
continued to excel on Saturday night. At 5:43 of the first period,
Karpenko put the Big Red up by one after knocking in a rebound off
a shot from Johnston.
Almost five minutes later, Charissa Stadnyk tied the game for
Princeton after scoring off a rebound from Paula Romanchuk.
Romanchuk shot from the left circle and Mazzotta made the initial
save, but the puck went right to Stadnyk, who pushed it into the
open goal.
Late in the first period, Johnston broke free from the Big Red
defensive zone and skated down ice on a 2-on-1. She fed the puck to
White who passed the lone defender and flipped the puck over the
Tigers' goalie's left shoulder.
Cornell carried its lead until late in the second period. Christine
Foster had the puck behind the Big Red goal and passed to Annie
Greenwood. Greenwood fired a one-timer into the left of the Big Red
goal to tie the game at 2-2.
Princeton outshot the Big Red in the third and final period, but
Mazzotta held firm in net making 12 saves. Neither team was able to
score in overtime leaving the game tied at 2-2.
Cornell will play its final home games of the season next weekend
as it plays host to Dartmouth and Harvard.
