Power-Play Goals in Third Pace Crimson

Boxscore

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Harvard women's ice hockey team struck twice on the power play in the third period to earn a 2-1 victory over archrival Yale Friday evening at Bright Hockey Center.  Cori Bassett and Jenny Brine both netted goals with an extra Crimson attacker, while Christina Kessler made 27 saves for her 10th victory of the season as Harvard extended its win streak to six games.

The Crimson (12-7-3, 11-4-2 ECAC Hockey, 6-2-0 Ivy League) had several quality chances early, including shots from the doorstep of the Yale goal by Randi Griffin and Anna McDonald.  Griffin just missed the net from the slot, while McDonald's attempt was kicked aside by goaltender Genny Ladiges.  Moments later, Liza Ryabkina grabbed possession of a loose puck in front, but her chip shot just missed the top of the net, instead sailing over the cage.

With 10 minutes to play in the opening frame, Kate Buesser, standing in the left corner of the Yale zone, fed McDonald with a pass in front, but Ladiges again came up with a save.  McDonald also had a chance with three minutes to go, but her one-timer from the left side bounced wide.

Through one period of play, Harvard led 13-8 in shots, and held Yale (9-14-0, 5-11-0, 2-5-0) scoreless on two power plays.

In the second, the Crimson had three chances with an extra attacker, but Harvard could not find the back of the net.  Katharine Chute provided the best chances for the Crimson in the stanza, with both coming in the final minutes of the period.  With two minutes to go, Chute, standing at the left side of the crease, threw a shot on net, but Ladiges dove to her left to cover the open portion of the net to keep Harvard off the scoreboard.

In the final minute, Vaillancourt made a long pass from the right circle in the Harvard zone to Chute, who was skating at center ice.  Chute accepted the pass and went in alone on a breakaway.  The sophomore forward skated toward the right side and mustered a shot, but the puck hit Ladiges in the chest and rolled into the corner.  Entering the final period of play, the Crimson controlled shots, leading 28-19, and had a 23-18 advantage in faceoff victories.

After Yale's Danielle Kozlowski was whistled for checking at 1:29 of the third, Bassett gave the Crimson a 1-0 lead on the ensuing power play.  Vaillancourt played the puck in the left side of the Bulldogs' zone and fired a pass diagonally across the ice, finding Bassett's stick.  Bassett controlled the puck and stuffed it home past Ladiges's left pad at 2:09.

Yale battled back to knot the game on an acrobatic goal by Bray Ketchum at 8:37.  Caroline Murphy picked up a bouncing puck in the neutral zone and chipped ahead a pass to Ketchum, who avoided two defenders and skated into the Crimson zone.  Ketchum then passed the puck off the left wall to herself before facing the net and wristing the puck over Kessler.

With 6:13 to play and a Yale penalty about to expire. Vaillancourt faked a shot before releasing a hard slapper at Ladiges.  The puck ricocheted off Ladiges' pads and directly to Brine, who taped it in for the game-winning goal.

Harvard finished the game successful on two of its five power plays, while holding Yale scoreless on five opportunities with an extra attacker.

The Crimson will host Brown Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
