Cornell Flies Past Providence
ITHACA, N.Y.-The Big Red women's hockey team got back to its
winning ways Monday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Providence in
Lynah Rink. Brianne Gilbert, Ashley Duffy, Catherine White and
Hayley Hughes all scored for Cornell. Kayla Strong earned the win
in net for the Big Red making 31 saves. Cornell improves to 7-6-2
overall and is 3-3-2 in ECAC Hockey Action. Providence moved to
10-8-2.
At 12:14 of the first period, freshman Kendice Ogilvie passed the
puck to sophomore Amber Overguard. Overguard shot the puck at the
Providence goaltender. Gilbert grabbed the rebound and put the Big
Red up 1-0 with her first goal of the season.
Duffy put the Big Red up by two at 16:36 of the first after rifling
a shot from the blue line past the Friars' goaltender Danielle
Ciarletta. Overguard and Ogilvie assisted on the goal.
The Big Red took its two-goal lead into the second period. At 14:02
of the second period, Providence's Ashley Cottrell grabbed the puck
from a Big Red defender and skated down the ice to score the
Friars' lone goal of the game.
The Big Red was plagued with penalties early in the third period
but was able to kill off a minute of a five-on-three disadvantage
to retain its lead.
White gave her team a two-goal cushion at 11:30 of the third when
she wristed the puck up over Ciarletta's shoulder on the
power-play. Junior Stephanie Holmes and sophomore Amber Moore
picked up the assists.
Providence pulled its goaltender with a little under three minutes
left in the game in favor of an extra attacker. Hughes was fed the
puck in the Big Red defensive zone and shot it all the way down the
ice to score an empty net goal for Cornell. White and Moore
assisted on the goal.
The Big Red was 1-4 on the power play, while Providence was 0-6.
With the win, Strong improves to 4-3-1 for the season.
Cornell will play host to Colgate on Saturday afternoon for a 3
p.m. game.
