Big Red Unable to Halt Providence Rally
ITHACA, N.Y.-The Providence women's ice hockey
team used three second period goals to skate past the Big Red, 4-3,
on Sunday afternoon. Cornell notched three goals in the first
period off the sticks of Catherine White, Laura Danforth and Ashley
Duffy. Jenny Niesluchowski and Kayla Strong split time in net for
the Big Red each making 14 saves. Cornell moves to 6-6-2 overall,
while Providence improved to 10-7-2.
The Big Red entered the game without a few of its key players due
to injury, and Cornell's leading scorer, sophomore Rebecca
Johnston, is currently playing for the Canadian Under-22 team in
Ravensburg, Germany at the 2009 MLP Cup.
Cornell came out fast in the first period looking to score early.
Freshman Kendice Ogilvie took a pass from junior Stephanie Holmes
and shot at Providence goaltender Genevieve Lacasse. Lacasse made
the initial save but the rebound bounced to White who buried it in
the net to notch her eighth goal of the season at 3:45 of the first
period.
The Big Red found itself in a similar situation midway through the
first. Sophomore Karlee Overguard shot hard at the net and the puck
bounced off Lacasse. Danforth put Cornell up 2-0 with her fourth
goal of the season at 10:32. Junior Kelly McGinty also assisted on
the goal.
Niesluchowski stopped the puck in the Cornell defensive zone and
slid it to freshman Jess Martino. Martino handed the puck off to
Duffy who skated it the entire length of the ice and with a hard
wrist shot netted it in the top of the Friars' net to give Cornell
a three-goal advantage.
Less than 20 seconds later, Providence's Katy Beach scored her
team's first goal of the game with shot over Niesluchowski's
shoulder. Abby Gauthier and Jackie Duncan assisted on the goal.
After the goal, Danielle Cairletta came in to play in net for
Providence.
The Big Red headed into the second period with a two-goal lead, but
Providence came out with renewed energy to score three unanswered
goals to win the game.
Ciarletta earned the win in net for Providence making 22 saves,
Strong took the loss for the Big Red.
The two teams will play again on Monday afternoon for a 2 p.m. game
in Lynah Rink.
