Yale Falls Short in Upset Bid
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Forward Danielle Welch's goal at 1:52 of
overtime helped No. 7 Boston College avoid an upset bid from Yale,
1-0 in overtime at Ingalls Rink Saturday night. The Bulldogs nearly
battled the Eagles to a stalemate behind 22 saves from freshman
goaltender Genny Ladiges, but BC goalie Molly Schaus turned aside
all 32 shots she faced. That included holding Yale scoreless on a
pair of 5-on-3s.
The Bulldogs controlled play for much of the first period,
outshooting BC (12-4-3, 7-2-1 Hockey East) 12-4. Schaus, who also
plays for the U.S. National Team, stopped a shot from sophomore
Bray Ketchum with eight minutes to play in the first, then was able
to glove the attempt to knock in the rebound by freshman defenseman
Heather Grant.
The Bulldogs were killing off their second penalty of the game when
their next big scoring chance came. On the forecheck, senior
forward Danielle Kozlowski broke up a pass right in front of the BC
goal. But Schaus, who had gone out of position trying for the puck
herself, was able to get back in position to stop the shot before
Kozlowski could get full control of the puck.
A pair of penalties on the Eagles late in the first gave Yale a
5-on-3 for 1:43. Senior defenseman Helen Resor had a slap shot
blocked, and Schaus grabbed another shot by Ketchum and forced a
faceoff. Resor sent another slap shot just wide as time expired in
the period, though Yale still had 39 seconds with the two-man
advantage.
The Eagles killed off the remainder of the 5-on-3 at the start of
the second, then quickly went on the offensive. Forward Meghan
Fardelmann broke up a Yale pass in the neutral zone and chased down
the loose puck behind the Yale defense. Ketchum and Resor were able
to get back with her, but as Fardelmann was falling to the ice in
the left circle she got off a tough backhanded shot. Ladiges was
able to stop it and then cover the rebound.
The Bulldogs killed off their third penalty five minutes into the
period, and senior forward Maggie Westfal nearly snuck a wrist shot
past Schaus 90 seconds later. The teams remained scoreless into the
second intermission.
The third period saw Yale get another 5-on-3 with 13 minutes left.
The Bulldogs had several quality chances, starting with a slap shot
from Resor that went just wide right at the start. After nearly
having one of her shots deflected in by freshman forward Aleca
Hughes, Kozlowski generated a trio of shots but sent one high and
one wide while another one was blocked. After a BC clear Schaus
stopped a Resor wrister, and forward Kelli Stack intercepted a pass
and cleared the puck to kill off the last of Yale's advantage.
The Bulldogs had another power play with 10 minutes left, but after
a slap shot from Grant sailed wide the Eagles were able to generate
a short-handed scoring chance that Ladiges snuffed out. Schaus
gloved a wrister from senior forward Crysti Howser off a feed from
Hughes with nine minutes left.
Yale outshot BC 11-8 in the third but could not break the deadlock.
Neither team had a shot on goal in overtime until Stack skated the
puck in along the left boards, cut in to the left circle and fed
forward Andrea Green in the slot. Green quickly kept the puck
moving across to an open Welch low in the right circle, and she
banged it in past Ladiges' stick side.
The goal ended a streak of 158:30 of scoreless hockey for Yale,
which included work from both Ladiges and sophomore goalie Jackee
Snikeris.
This was the last non-conference game for Yale (7-7-0, 3-4-0 ECAC
Hockey). The Bulldogs host Dartmouth next Friday at 7:00 p.m. for
the start of Alumnae Weekend.
