PRINCETON, N.J - The Dartmouth women's hockey jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held off a third-period charge from Princeton to earn a 3-2 win in the season opener.
After not capitalizing on its first two power plays, Dartmouth finally came through as freshman Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.) tallied her first collegiate goal on the power play. Junior Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) and freshman Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) added the assists with the goal coming with 9:37 left in the opening period.
Junior Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) increased the lead to 2-0 with 1:58 remaining with her first of the season. Cunningham hooked up with sophomore Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) and senior Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) to give Dartmouth some breathing room going into the first intermission.
The Big Green dominated the first period of play with an 18-7 advantage in shots.
Dartmouth added to its lead as Parsons posted her second point of the evening with her first tally of the season to push the lead to 3-0. Foley assisted on the play for her second point in her first collegiate game.
In the second period, the Big Green once again had the advantage in shots with 14 shots to nine for the Tigers.
Princeton narrowed the lead to 3-1 in the third period with 12:34 left in the game. Heather Landry tallied a power play goal for the Tigers with the assists going to Katherine Dineen and Stephanie Denino.
Landry made the game more interesting with her second power play goal of the night with 4:10 left in the game. Denino was there again with her second assist, while Sasha Sherry posted her first helper of the evening.
Princeton turned the tide on the Big Green in the third period, outshooting Dartmouth 20-9. The Big Green won the overall battle in shots with a 42-36 advantage. The game was filled with penalties as the teams combined for 18 trips to the penalty box.
Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Big Green travels to Quinnipiac for a 4 p.m. face-off at the TD Banknorth Sports Center.
