A power-play goal by sophomore Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) midway through the first period gave the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team the early lead, but the Golden Knights could not hold on as they lost at Niagara University 3-1 on Friday night.
Ranked 10th in the nation entering the weekend, Clarkson will look to get back on the winning track when they faceoff against the Purple Eagles again on Saturday at Dwyer Arena, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Golden Knights own a 2-4-1 overall record.
Clarkson recorded only its second first-period goal of the season when Waldie connected off assists from junior Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) and Kimberly McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT) while on the power play at 10:45 of the opening stanza for her third goal of the year.
Niagara (1-8-0) took control in the second period with three goals in an eight-minute span. Ashley Riggs started the Purple Eagles rally, scoring at 5:55. Seventy-three seconds later, Kayla Colang tallied for the game-winner. At 13:41, Autumn Stuntz put the home team on top 3-1.
Clarkson out shot Niagara 32-26, including a 24-15 margin over the first 40 minutes. Sophomore Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) posted 23 saves. Jenni Bauer made 31 stops for the Purple Eagles.
The Knights were 1-of-2 on the power play and killed off all four Niagara extra-man opportunities.
