Trio of Seniors Carve Out Win for Saints
CANTON, NY -- St. Lawrence University senior assistant captains Alison Domenico, Carson Duggan and Lisa Batchelor led the No. 5 Saints to a tough 5-4 victory over Ohio State University on Saturday afternoon, leading the Scarlet and Brown to a weekend sweep of the Buckeyes. Domenico had a goal and two assists, Duggan added two goals and a helper while Batchelor tallied the game-winning goal.
Duggan, who is the University's all-time leading goal scorer, continued her record-breaking career as she set a new power play goals record on Saturday. The Ma-Me-O Beach, AB native scored two goals with a player advantage to bring her career tally to 26, one better than Chelsea Grills '08.
The two teams exchanged goals in the latter stages of the first period, as Domenico gave her team a 1-0 lead by chipping in a rebound off a shot by Batchelor past Ohio State goalie Liana Bonanno at 12:44. The Buckeyes' Natalie Spooner answered only 30 seconds later by hammering a one-timer past Saints' goaltender Brittony Chartier off a centering pass from behind the net.
The scoring would continue only 2:14 later when Duggan netted her first power play goal of the game to tie Grills' record and give St. Lawrence a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of action. She was able to come away from a scrum at the top of Bonanno's crease with the puck and slip it across the goal line for her 11th tally of the season at 15:28.
In what proved to be a theme throughout the game, Ohio State answered early in the second period to knot the score at 2-2 when Christina Mancuso collected a rebound off a shot from Olivia Antaonoli and beat Chartier only 2:49 into the second stanza.
Though Bonanno did her best to keep the score tied at 2-2 by robbing St. Lawrence captain Marianna Locke and Domenico from point-blank range, the Saints' offense was too much in the second period as they manufactured a 4-2 lead after two. First-year student Alley Bero extended her active goal-scoring streak to five games and point-scoring streak to six with a goal at 9:23 of the second period when she slapped a one-timer behind Bonanno off a slick pass by Duggan.
Duggan wasn't done just yet, as she made it 4-2 at 17:25 of the second period to set the new career power play goal record. Domenico sent a crisp pass to the blue line to junior defenseman Brittaney Maschmeyer while the Saints' skated with a player advantage. Maschmeyer's blast from the blue line was blocked by an Ohio State penalty killer directly to Duggan at the goal mouth, and before Bonanno could get into position, the red light behind her was on.
A fantastic individual effort by Spooner would claw the Buckeyes back to within one goal only 4:08 into the third period as she stole the puck in the Saints' zone and snapped a low wrist shot between Chartier's pads to make the score 4-3. However, Batchelor would give the home team their two-goal advantage back at 8:40 when she tipped in a pass from Domenico on an impressive two-on-two breakout. The goal was Batchelor's second of the season, while Domenico was credited with her eighth helper.
Though Ohio State would get to within one again only 2:08 later on a one-time blast in the slot by Morgan Marziali, they wouldn't be able to get the tying goal. The Buckeyes had several close-range chances that Chartier was able to handle, and two minor penalties in the final three minutes of regulation would end the visitor's hopes of a comeback.
"It wasn't our prettiest effort, but we found a way," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "Our power play was effective again tonight, and we got some clutch play from our veterans that proved to be the difference."
The Saints finished 2-of-7 with the extra skater while Ohio State was 1-of-4, while the home team finished with a 39-26 advantage in shots on goal. Chartier made 22 saves in the game to improve to 10-2-2 on the season while Bonanno suffered the loss (5-9-0) despite making 34 stops.
St. Lawrence, now winners of nine of their last ten games, will shift back to ECAC Hockey action next weekend when they welcome the Central New York teams, Colgate and Cornell, to Appleton Arena.
