Bobcats Fall to Wayne State in Nutmeg Classic

STORRS, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team lost, 3-2, to Wayne State in the Consolation Game of the Nutmeg Classic, hosted by the University of Connecticut. UConn and Yale University will play Saturday at 7 p.m. in the tournament's championship game. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 2-15-1, while the Warriors improve to 10-3-1.

Wayne State jumped on the board early at the 14:51 mark of the first period with a power-play goal from Natalie Payne. Payne picked up the puck to the left of Quinnipiac goaltender Nanna Holm Glaas (Stockholm, Sweden) and shot the puck to the stick side of Glass, ricocheting off of her left pad and into the net. Jill Szandzik assisted on the play.

The Bobcats tied it at 1-1 with 5:27 remaining in the first period. Several Bobcats fired shots on net, but Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) reached out and poked the puck past the Wayne State goaltender Lindsey Park. Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) and Melissa Perry (Chelsea, Mich.) were credited with the assists on Flor's second of the season.

The Warriors took the lead 1:22 into the second period in a three-on-one rush up ice. Lindsay DiPietro slipped it just under the diving Glaas for her sixth goal of the year. Melissa Boal and Samantha Poyton recorded assists on the play.

The Bobcats tied the score, 2-2, with 1:29 remaining in the middle period. Elyse Cole (Oakville, Ontario) carried the puck down the right side of the offensive zone and moved the puck to Janine Duffy (Toronto, Ontario) at the top of the crease. Duffy quickly snapped the puck into the lower right corner of the net for her fifth goal of the season. Chelsea Illchuk (Lockhart, Manitoba) also picked up an assist on the play after making the initial pass to Cole to start the play.

Wayne State regained the lead six minutes into the third period with a power-play goal from Alyssa Baldin. The Warriors capitalized on the five-on-four advantage and Micheline Frappi fired a quick pass to Baldin in the right goal circle. Baldin received the pass wristed a shot by Glaas for the game winner. Szandzik also assisted on the goal.

Glaas made 18 saves in the loss, while Park stopped 19 Quinnipiac shots in earning the win.

The Bobcats return to action Tuesday, Dec. 2, when they travel to take on conference foe Princeton. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
