Locke Reaches "Century Club"

Boxscore

St. Lawrence University senior captain Marianna Locke picked up her 100th career point on Friday afternoon, scoring the game-winning goal against The Ohio State University at Appleton Arena.  The No. 5/6 Saints (9-2-2, 5-1-0) knocked off the Buckeyes 5-1 thanks largely in part to a 39-20 advantage in shots on goal and two late power play goals.

The Scarlet and Brown wasted little time in earning a 1-0 lead, as senior assistant captain Carson Duggan picked up her ninth goal of the season only 3:20 into regulation.  Junior Brittaney Maschmeyer's long shot from the blue line was blocked high into the air by an Ohio State defenseman, and when the puck landed just outside of the goal mouth, Duggan was there to pounce on it and score.

Despite being outshot 10-6 in the period, the Buckeyes had several great chances to beat St. Lawrence netminder Brittony Chartier.  Hayley Klassen and Natalie Spooner both earned breakaway chances but missed the net, and another shot by the visitors hit off the right post and sailed wide.

"We were fortunate to come out of the first period with a slim lead, as we dodged a few bullets," said

St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.  "They had the two breakaway chances that barely missed and another shot hit a pipe. Those chances sent a quick signal to us that they were ready to play."

Locke would make it 2-0 midway through the second period with a short-handed tally at 11:22.  While the Saints were in the midst of killing a four-minute power play for Ohio State, Duggan stole the puck behind Facklis' net and centered it into the slot.  Locke was there waiting and her one-timer beat the goalie and brought her career point total to 100, becoming only the 15th player in St. Lawrence history to record that many collegiate points.

"Marianna (Locke) is one of the best leaders I've coached both on and off the ice," added Coach Wells.  "She's earned everyone one of those 100 points, and that goal proved to be crucial as it gave us a bit of insurance."

The Saints, who entered the game with a perfect 8-0-0 mark after leading through two periods, kept that record intact with three third period goals to clinch the victory.  Duggan scored an unassisted goal only 19 seconds into the third to make it 3-0.  The Ma-Me-O Beach, Alberta native sent a low shot on net from inside the right circle that Facklis appeared to handle, but the goalie tripped and fell into the goal, taking the puck with her for Duggan's 10th of the season.

Junior Britni Smith made it 4-0 at 7:52 when her blast from the blue line, set up by junior Tara Akstull and sophomore Karell Emard, snuck between Facklis' pads for a power play tally.

Though Spooner would spoil Chartier's shutout bid at 13:26 of the final stanza by snapping a wrist shot just under the cross bar to make it 4-1, rookie Alley Bero came right back only 1:11 seconds later with her fifth goal of the season to cap the scoring.  Maschmeyer again started the play, as her shot bounced cleanly off of Facklis' pads right to an awaiting Bero, who finished the play for the Saints' second power play goal of the third.

"I thought our power play really got into a groove in the third period, as we ended up with 13 shots with the extra skater and buried two goals," said Coach Wells.

St. Lawrence finished 2-of-5 with the extra attacker while Ohio State was 0-for-3.  The Saints improved to 4-1 against the Buckeyes in the all-time series, while Chartier earned the victory with a 19-save effort and Facklis suffered the loss despite making 34 stops.

The two teams will re-group and meet again tomorrow, Saturday, November 29 for to complete the

non-conference series at Appleton Arena.  The puck will drop on the Saints and Buckeyes at 1:00pm.
