Union Battles Toronto to 3-3 Tie
SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College women's ice hockey season has not officially started, but the Dutchwomen played to a thrilling 3-3 tie against the Toronto Aeros in an exhibition contest Saturday at Messa Rink. Union begins its regular season on Friday, Oct. 3 with a 7 p.m. contest against Boston University.
"It was a good start to our season," said head coach Claudia Asano. "Everyone got to play and we saw what our freshmen can do and how they play with our returners. So I guess we'll go from here."
The Dutchwomen got a first period goal from senior forward Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI), and second period goals from sophomore forward Suzanne Ostrow (Boise, ID) and freshman forward Lauren Hoffman (Marcy, NY).
Senior goalkeeper and 2007-08 All-ECAC Third Team selection, Lundy Day (Calgary, AB), played two full periods, parts of the third and all of overtime. She finished with 23 saves, not including four in the shootout. She kept the game going in overtime by making a sliding save on a wrist shot by Kelly Babstock early in the extra frame.
The freshmen tandem of Nicole Muske (Ramsey, MN) and Kate Gallagher (Minneapolis, MN) shared time in the third period and made two and three saves, respectively.
After the Aeros jumped out to a 1-0 lead 5:46 into the game on a goal by Jenna McParland, Pocock knotted things up with a powerplay goal 10:14 into the period. Pocock, who finished last year with three goals, was set up by freshman forward Adelle Calahan (Skokie, IL) and sophomore forward Elsa Perushek (Maple Grove, MN).
Toronto tallied a late goal with 10 ticks remaining in the first, but Union answered with an early goal in the second. Only 2:04 into period two, the Dutchwomen's leading returner, Ostrow, evened the score from a pass from freshman defender Dania Simmonds (Aurora, ON). Hoffman put Union ahead 15:09 into the second on a powerplay goal set up by Gentile and Perushek, but Toronto answered early in the third on a goal by Babstock.
Toronto held a 31-22 advantage in shots, including 5-1 in overtime, but the Dutchwomen skated away with the victory. Boston University is game one of a two game weekend for Union. Northeastern comes to Messa Rink on Saturday, Oct. 4 for a 4 p.m. contest.
