Quinnipiac Comes up Short on Midwest Trip
MADISON, Wisc. - The Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team lost to #2 Wisconsin, 7-3, in the final game of a two-game series at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisc. The loss drops the Bobcats record to 0-2, while the Badgers improve to 2-0.
Elyse Cole (Belleville, Ont.) and Janine Duffy (Toronto, Ont.) each recorded a goal and an assist, while Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) picked up two assists. Kelley Davies (Chesapeake, Va.) tallied the third goal for the Bobcats. Erika Bolognino (Carol Stream, Ill.) also recorded an assist on the night.
Wisconsin opened up the scoring just over eight minutes in the first period. Quinnipiac goaltender Nanna Holm Glaas (Stockholm, Sweden) got her glove on the puck, but it was scooped up by Brook Ammerman and flipped past Glaas. Jasmine Giles and Kyla Sanders were credited with the assists.
Quinnipiac answered minutes later at the 12:12 mark. Duffy took control of the puck behind the Wisconsin net and skated out to the left of Badgers' goalie Alannah McCready. McCready attempted to stop Duffy, but the junior forward dropped a pass off in front to Elyse Cole (Belleville, Ont.). Cole's goal was the Bobcats' first of the season and 34th of her career. Flor also picked up an assist on the play, the 12th in her career, moving her into a tie for fourth place all-time at Quinnipiac.
Wisconsin broke the 1-1 tie with a power play goal at 13:42 in the first period. Hilary Knight was credited with the goal after Glaas rejected Erika Lawler's slap shot. Knight collected the loose puck and put it home to give Wisconsin a 2-1 lead. Brittany Haverstock also tallied an assist.
Knight netted an unassisted goal, her third goal of the weekend, just 43 seconds into the second period. Mallory Deluce also scored her third goal of the weekend after maneuvering through the Quinnipiac defense and depositing a goal at the 7:19 mark. Meghan Duggan picked up the helper on the goal.
The Bobcats cut the lead in half with a goal with 3:31 left to play in the second period. After receiving a pass from Flor, Bolognino took a shot from the right face-off circle that bounced off McCready's pads to a wide-open Duffy. Duffy flicked the puck in for her ninth career goal. Bolognino and Flor were each credited with assists.
Wisconsin squeezed in one more goal with nine seconds remaining in the second period. Knight scored her second goal of the night with assists from Deluce and Rachel Bible.
Knight scored two more in the third for a total of four goals for the game. Her third came at the 1:01 mark when Lawler dished a quick pass to Knight who shot it just under Glaas' glove. She netted her fourth at the 18:05 mark with assists from Lawler and Angie Keseley.
The Bobcats scored again just seconds later at the 18:13 mark of the third period. Cole recorded her 20th career assist as she passed the puck from the left face-off circle to Davies who fired it past McCready on her glove side.
Glaas recorded 42 saves on the night, including 19 in the second period.
The Bobcats return to action on Oct. 3 against St. Cloud State in their home opener at the T.D. Banknorth Center in Hamden, Conn. at 7:00 p.m.
