Bero, Domenico Spark St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. — The No. 9 St. Lawrence University
women’s hockey team got a pair of goals each from senior
assistant captain Alison Domenico and first-year student Alley
Bero, while junior goalie Brittony Chartier turned in a 13-save
performance to pick up her first shutout of the season as the
Saints blitzed Robert Morris at Appleton Arena on Saturday
afternoon, 5-0.
The Saints (3-1-2, 0-0-0) outshot the Colonials 50-13 in the
contest, and with the weekend sweep, improve to 18-1-1 in their
last 20 meetings against CHA teams.
“I thought today’s game was certainly our best team
effort of the season,” said St. Lawrence University head
coach Chris Phelps. “We were able to create pretty consistent
offensive pressure and get some important goals against a very
solid goalie (Brianne McLaughlin).”
The home team wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead, as
first-year student Vanessa Emond fed senior captain Marianna Locke
in front of McLaughlin and the Brasher Falls, NY, native banged in
her own rebound for her first goal of the season to open the
scoring. The goal occurred only 1:24 into the first period, but
would be the only tally as McLaughlin made 15 first period saves to
keep her team in the game.
Bero, who had her best offensive game of the season as she provided
a consistent spark for the Saints’ offensive attack, would
make it 2-0 with five minutes remaining in the second period.
Senior Carson Duggan’s initial shot was stopped by
McLaughlin, but the rebound came right out to Bero, who took
advantage of the goaltender being on the ice surface and lifted a
shot just under the cross bar for her first collegiate goal.
Though McLaughlin continued her impressive play in net with 17 more
saves in the second period, there was very little she could do on
the Saints’ third goal which came at 1:25 of the third
period. Locke chipped a pass at center ice up to junior defenseman
Brittaney Maschmeyer, who crossed the Robert Morris blue line with
a two-on-one chance with Domenico. Maschmeyer wound up for a big
slap shot, then gently passed the puck through the slot to a wide
open Domenico, who fired the puck into the open net with McLaughlin
out of position.
Domenico would strike again only 3:16 later while the Saints skated
short-handed to make it a 4-0 game with 15:19 to play. The Nepean,
ON native intercepted a pass in the visitor’s zone and sniped
a wrist shot past McLaughlin, who would be replaced by Daneca
Butterfield later in the period.
Despite Butterfield making ten saves during her time between the
pipes for Robert Morris, she was unable to keep Bero off the
scoreboard again as the Akwesasne, NY, native picked up her second
of the game to complete the scoring at 18:54 of the third period.
Bero, who showed great speed the entire weekend, took a pass from
junior Becky Street, beat a defender and rifled a low shot past
Butterfield for her second career goal. The assist was also a
collegiate first for Street.
“I’m very happy with this weekend as we stayed focused
and got very solid play on both ends of the ice,” added Coach
Wells. “We get this week to rest up a bit before heading into
conference play the following weekend against Yale and
Brown.”
St. Lawrence finished 1-for-8 on the power play while Robert Morris
was 0-for-8. Chartier, who was tested mostly in the third period,
finished with 13 saves on the evening while McLaughlin suffered the
loss despite making 35 stops.
St. Lawrence will open the 2008-09 ECAC Hockey regular season on
Friday, November 7 against the Yale Bulldogs.
