PRINCETON -- Senior goaltender Kristen Young made 29 saves and
sophomore Sasha Sherry had a goal and an assist as the Princeton
women’s hockey team defeated 10th-ranked Connecticut 4-1 on
Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton needed an early goal after being shut out in the series
opener on Friday night, and the Tigers got one when freshman
Charissa Stadnyk posted her first collegiate goal 4:41 into the
game. The goal came on the power play as Stadnyk deflected a point
shot by sophomore Laura Martindale past UConn goaltender Alexandra
Garcia. Sherry also assisted on the goal.
Princeton extended its lead to 2-0 with a second power-play tally
at the 12:12 mark of the second period. Freshman Heather Landry and
senior Christine Foster worked the puck low before feeding it to
senior Katherine Dineen on the point. Dineen fired a shot that
eluded Garcia and gave Princeton the two-goal lead.
The Tigers added a goal with 2:19 left in the period to go ahead
3-0. Junior Melanie Wallace took a shot from the top of the circles
that got through UConn goaltender Brittany Wilson, but lay behind
her in the crease. Freshman Danielle DiCesare won the race to the
puck and shoved it over the line for her first collegiate goal.
UConn cut the lead to 3-1 when Michelle Binning scored on the
power play midway through the third period but Sherry iced the win
with an empty-net goal that she banked in from her own goal line.
Freshman Paula Romanchuk had an assist on the insurance marker.
Young made 29 saves for the win, while Garcia and Wilson combined
for 23 for UConn. Princeton was outshot 30-27.
Princeton is now 1-1 on the season and returns to action next
Friday against Dartmouth at 7 p.m. at Baker Rink.
