DETROIT, Mich. -- The Colgate women’s hockey team split the Wayne State series with a 3-2 win on Saturday, Oct. 25 at City Sports Center. The Raiders were led by junior Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) registered the eventual game winner in the third period and assisted another to help the Raiders hold of a late Wayne State attack.

Senior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) put the Raiders on the board first in the opening period at the 9:11 mark. Hunt scored on a breakaway goal that was assisted by sophomore Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) and. Milan originally cleared the puck off the boards to Rotenberg who found Hunt all alone at center ice. Hunt finished the job by faking to right then dragging the puck over to the left side getting Warriors goaltender Lindsey Park to bite to right before finding the back of the net. The Raiders out-shot Wayne State 10-9 in the period to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.

Senior Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) recorded her first goal of the season 28 seconds into the second period as she pounded in a rebound past Park. Junior Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) took the initial shot from inside the left circle after receiving a sharp pass from junior Ali Edell (Mountain Lakes, N.J.). Freshman goaltender Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) held Wayne State scoreless until 2:47 remaining in the second when Sam Poyton found the net during a two on one breakaway. Colgate out-shot the Warriors 10-5 in the second and carried a 2-1 lead into the third.

Rotenberg’s power-play goal seven minutes into the third expanded the Raiders lead to 3-1. Rotenberg received a perfect pass from senior Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) who won the puck on the boards in the left corner, positioned herself at the top of the leftwing circle then found Rotenberg alone on the doorstep. Wayne State would respond with 14 seconds remaining after pulling the goalie to narrow its deficit to 3-2, but it wasn’t enough as Colgate recorded its first road win of the season.

Sass recorded 23 saves for her second win of the season, while Park turned away 21 for Wayne State.

Colgate finished 1-for-5 on the power play while the Warriors went 1-7. The Raiders and Wayne State have split every series with Colgate holding a 10-9 overall record.

Colgate (4-3) will continue against CHA teams as it hosts Mercyhurst next weekend in Starr Rink. Friday’s game is slated for 7 p.m.
