Duggan Nets Hat Trick as Saints Roll
CANTON, NY -- Senior assistant captain Carson Duggan pulled to within one goal of the University's all-time record with a hat trick against Robert Morris on Friday evening at Appleton Arena. The Ma-Me-O Beach, Alberta native's three goals, along with a fantastic 30-save performance in net by junior Brittony Chartier, led the No. 9 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 5-1 win over the Colonials in the first ever meeting between the two teams.
The Saints improve to 2-1-2 (0-0-0) on the season while Robert Morris' win streak ends at two games as they fall to 3-2-0 (2-0-0).
"I thought Robert Morris came out with a head of steam and really took it to us in the opening minutes, but Brittony (Chartier) kept us in it," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "We got a few timely goals that certainly gave us confidence as the game wore on."
Duggan got the Saints on the scoreboard at 6:37 of the first period, as she picked up a pass from rookie Alley Bero and skated into the Colonials' zone along the far boards. Her initial shot hit squarely off goaltender Brianne McLaughlin's leg pad and bounced right back to Duggan's stick as she lifted it into the open net for the 1-0 lead. Junior Tara Akstull also assisted on the goal.
It took Robert Morris only 1:45 to even the score at 1-1, as a turnover by St. Lawrence right in front of Chartier gave Kylie Rossler a one-on-one try with the netminder. Rossler sent a crisp wrist shot that beat Chartier's glove for her first goal of the season at 8:22 (unassisted).
Junior defenseman Britni Smith would put the home team back on top 2-1 at 17:23 of the opening frame. Bero chipped a pass into the middle of the ice just inside the Robert Morris blue line, which allowed Smith to wind up a slap shot that hit both the left and right posts before crossing the goal line for Smith's first goal of the season.
In the waning seconds of the first period, first-year student Vanessa Emond found sophomore defenseman Michelle Zimmerman along the boards to McLaughlin's left. Zimmerman fired a shot towards goal, and though the goaltender was in position to make the save, Duggan re-directed the shot into the goal for her second of the game at 3-1 lead with only 4.1 seconds left in the period.
"Carson (Duggan) has such a great skill for finding the puck around the goal and finishing the play," added Coach Wells. "Her goal at the end of the first period really got us fired up as we knew they'd continue to make a strong push to get back into the game."
Robert Morris did just that, as they managed to out-shoot St. Lawrence in both the second and third periods. However, Chartier was perfect after allowing Rossler's goal, making all 22 saves she saw in the final 40 minutes of regulation to improve to 2-1-2 on the season.
Senior assistant captain Alison Domenico would pad St. Lawrence's lead at 1:41 of the second period on the power play, as a quick pass from Akstull found her alone in the slot where she drilled the puck behind McLaughin for her first goal of the season. Senior captain Marianna Locke picked up a helper on the goal as well.
Duggan would complete the hat trick at 11:44 of the second period, as she once again benefitted on a re-directed shot from Zimmerman for her fifth goal of the season. After junior defenseman Brittaney Maschmeyer fed the puck to Zimmerman at the left circle, the Littleton, CO, native's shot bounced off Duggan and past McLaughlin for her 84th collegiate goal, only one behind Sabrina Harbec's all-time record.
"We had a few bounces go our way tonight, but Robert Morris showed a lot of hustle and caused quite a few turnovers in our zone. We need to eliminate those mistakes tomorrow if we're going to win two against a quality team like them," added Wells.
The two teams finished with 31 shots on goal each, while St. Lawrence was 2-for-7 with the extra attacker and Robert Morris was 0-for-3. McLaughlin made several impressive saves in suffering the loss, falling to 3-2-0 on the season with a 26-save showing.
The Saints and Colonials will battle in the second game of their weekend series tomorrow, Saturday, October 25 at 4:00pm at Appleton Arena.
