Tigers Blanked in Opener
PRINCETON, NJ -- No. 10 Connecticut scored three goals on
36 shots to shut out the Princeton women's hockey team 3-0 in the
Tigers' season opener on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton senior goaltender Kristen Young made 33 saves as
Princeton played its first game of the season.
The teams played a scoreless first period that was indicative of
the night to come. Princeton played well early in the period, but
as the period moved on, UConn slowly began to take over play and
controlled the action late in the period.
Play opened up in the second period with UConn getting two great
chances early on when Michelle Binning and Tiffany Good each had
breakaways within a minute of each other. Young made both saves to
keep the game scoreless. Princeton then countered with a good
chance from freshman Charissa Stadnyk, but her shot from the
doorstep was stopped by Husky goaltender Brittany Wilson before
bouncing up and over the net.
UConn finally broke through at 14:17 of the period when Binning
scored her ninth goal of the season. Brianna Uliasz had her shot
from the blueline blocked, but the puck caromed right to Dominiue
Thibault who sent a pass to Binning in the slot. Binning just
redirected the puck into the goal to put the Huskies ahead.
Kristen Russell made it a 2-0 lead for the Huskies with 39 seconds
left in the second with a power-play goal. Brittany Murphy and Jody
Sydor assisted Russel's point shot. UConn sealed its win with a
third period goal from Amy Hollstein that was assisted by
Thibault.
Young finished the game with 33 saves as Princeton was outshot
36-23. Wilson made 23 saves for the shutout.
Princeton is now 0-1 with the loss, while UConn moves to 5-2-2 with
the win. The teams complete their series tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
