Big Green Edged in Exhibition Game

Boxscore

HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's hockey team was edged by McGill University, 3-2, in an exhibition game at Thompson Arena on Friday night.

Dartmouth got goals from sophomore Larissa Roche (Thorhild, Alta.) and freshman Kelly Hood (Boston, Mass.), while senior netminder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) and junior Mariel Lacina combined to make 27 saves in the defeat.

McGill, located in Montreal, Que., came to Hanover as the defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport National Champions and will be heading to Harvard and Yale this weekend on its exhibition tour. Vanessa Davidson led the way with two tallies and Ann-Sophie Bettez added two assists. Martlet netminder Charline Labonte was spectacular in net with 35 saves, including a couple of game-savers down the stretch.

After a scoreless first period, Dartmouth got on the board first as Roche found the net from the top of the crease to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead. Dartmouth circled the puck behind the net and sophomore Alyssa Boehm (Waterford, Conn.) got the puck and found Roche out front for the score.

With just 46 seconds remaining in the second period, McGill evened the score on a goal by Vanessa Davidson. The Martlets created a rush on the Big Green and Ann-Sophie Bettez slid the puck over to Davidson and she beat Lacina (London, Ont.) glove side to knot the score at 1-1.

Davidson struck again, this time only 22 seconds into the third period. Davidson hooked up with Bettez for the first of two times. Bettez tried to push one past Lacina and she made the save, but Davidson was at the right place at the right time for the score to give McGill its first lead of the game.

The Martlets took a 3-1 cushion two minutes and again it was Davidson, helped by Bettez.

Dartmouth got one back with 4:17 remaining in the game as Foley beat Labonte at the doorstep. Senior co-captain Sarah Newnam (Clifton, Va.) fired a shot on net was saved by Labonte and Foley, like Davidson, was right there to clean up.

The Big Green had a man advantage in the last 1:43 seconds, but couldn't get the puck past Labonte.

Dartmouth will open the season on Oct. 31 as the Big Green travels to Princeton to face the Tigers at 7 p.m. from Hobey Baker Rink
