Rensselaer Blanks Robert Morris
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Rensselaer women's hockey team scored two
third period goals en route to a 2-0 victory over Robert Morris, at
RMU Island Sports Center. With the win the Engineers improve to
8-5-2, while the Colonials fall to 5-8-1.
Goals from junior Whitney Naslund (Bloomington,
MN/Bloomington-Jefferson) and freshman Alisa Harrison (Vienna,
VA/Washington Pride) at 8:25 and 15:07 of the third period gave RPI
all it needed as the Engineers turned a tight scoreless affair into
a 2-0 lead. Freshman Laura Guillemette (Ste-Marie-de-Beauce,
PQ/Notre Dame) picked up the lone assist on Naslund's tally, while
classmate Sierra Vadner (Apple Valley, MN/Minnesota Thoroughbreds)
recorded the only helper on Harrison's marker.
After a tightly contested opening period, in which the hosts held
an 11-7 advantage in shots, the Engineers held play in the second,
outshooting Robert Morris 19-3. Both goalies were equal to the task
stopping every shot they faced until Naslund beat sophomore Daneca
Butterfield (Kronau, SA/Notre Dame Hounds) midway through the final
frame.
Sophomore Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros)
earned the shutout in net for the Engineers, stopping all 22 shots
she faced. Butterfield finished with 33 saves.
RPI returns to action on December 5 and 6, when it continues ECAC
Hockey action at Quinnipiac (3pm) and Princeton (4pm),
respectively.
