Dartmouth Cruises Past Colgate to Remain Unbeaten at Home
HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's hockey team got goals from seven different skaters as the Big Green remained undefeated in Thompson Arena with a 7-2 win over Colgate on Saturday afternoon.
For Dartmouth (7-1-1, 6-1-1 ECAC Hockey), senior co-captain Sarah Newnam (Clifton, Va.) stayed hot for the Big Green with a goal and three assists for four points after a two-goal effort last night. Sophomore Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) contributed with a goal and two assists, while freshmen Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) and Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.) each added scores.
For Colgate (7-7-1, 2-3-1 ECAC Hockey), Elin Brown and Evan Minnick each tallied goals, while Clancy Todd posted two assists.
Dartmouth broke through on the power play with 6:45 left in the opening period on senior Julia Bronson's (Arlington, Va.) second of the season. Cunningham put a shot on Colgate's goaltender Lisa Plenderleith and the puck squirted out to Foley's stick. She then found an open Bronson in the left center and she hit the open net for the 1-0 lead.
Colgate answered 14 seconds later to tie it at 1-1. Brown received a pass from Clancy Todd and skated down the left side and beat sophomore Mariel Lacina (London, Ont.) with a fluttering shot over the glove.
Foley got the lead back for the Big Green with just over four minutes remaining. She got a pass from Cunningham, who was behind the net, and put a shot on net that Plenderleith stopped. However, Foley kept her balance as the puck got away from Plenderleith and she hit the open net to give Dartmouth a 2-1 lead at the end of one frame.
In the second period, Dartmouth exploded for four goals to push the lead to 6-1. Cunningham got things started 3:37 into the period with her fifth of the year. Newnam fired a shot from the point that went wide, the puck bounced off the back boards and right to Cunningham and she tucked it inside the right post for the 3-1 lead.
Fischer got in on the act with her second of the season on the power play with less than five minutes to play in the period. She broke into the Colgate zone and beat three defenders, along with Plenderleith to increase the lead to 4-1.
The Big Green added to the lead a minute later on sophomore Alyssa Boehm's (Watertown, Conn.) first of the season and second of her career. Once again it was a shot from the point by Newnam that Plenderleith couldn't handle and Boehm was right there for the clean-up goal to make it 5-1 in favor of Dartmouth.
With already two assists on the night, Newnam decided to score on of her own, which was her third in two nights. While on the power play she received a pass from her fellow captain Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) and beat Plenderlieth top shelf to close the period with a 6-1 lead.
Colgate netted its second goal of the night with six minutes remaining in the third period. The Raiders scored on the power play as Minnich posted her lone goal of the night with the assists going to Beth Rotenberg.
The Big Green closed out the scoring with five minutes left in the game as senior Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) tallied the seventh goal of the game for Dartmouth. Parsons put a shot on net that was saved, but the puck came to Kennedy at the left circle and she fired it past Elayna Hamashuck for the final score.
Lacina finished the night with 18 saves with seven coming in the final period. Plenderleith was shot on all night and made 27 saves in two periods, while Hamashuk posted nine in the last period.
Dartmouth had 13 power play chances and capitalized on three of them, while Colgate tallied one power play goal in seven opportunities.
The Big Green will be back in action on Friday and Saturday of next week as Dartmouth travels to defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth.
