Cornell Dumped by Crimson
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Big Red women’s hockey team
lost 5-1 to No. 9 Harvard on Saturday night at the Bright Hockey
Center. Sophomore Rebecca Johnston scored Cornell’s lone
goal. Cornell moves to 4-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in ECAC Hockey.
The Big Red and Crimson were scoreless after the first period, but
Harvard would score two unanswered goals in the second to take a
2-0 lead into the third.
Johnston put the Big Red within a goal at 1:25 of the third
period. Her eighth goal of the season was assisted by junior Liz
Zorn and freshman Catherine White.
Harvard’s Sarah Vailliancourt lengthened her team’s
lead scoring on the power play at 4:47 of the third. The Big Red
pulled goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski in favor of an extra
attacker, but Vailliancourt scored her second goal of the game on
the empty net at 18:55. The Crimson scored its fifth goal at
19:50.
Niesluchowski made 34 saves in the loss, and Christina Kessler
earned the win with 26 saves. Cornell was 0-5 on the power play,
and Harvard was 3-7.
Cornell will return home during Thanksgiving weekend playing host
to Niagara on Saturday and Sunday.
