Harvard Battles Colgate to Tie
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -Sarah Vaillancourt tallied two goals and collected three assists and Sarah Wilson and Jenny Brine each recorded a score and an assist as the No. 9 Harvard women's ice hockey team skated to a 5-5 tie against Colgate Friday evening at Bright Hockey Center.
The Crimson moves to 3-2-2 and 3-2-2 in ECAC Hockey, while the Raiders now own a 7-6-2 (2-2-1) record. Brittany Martin and Christina Kessler combined in net for 22 saves, while Colgate's Kimberly Sass stopped 36 shots.
Harvard tallied two goals early in the first to take a 2-0 lead at 5:15. Brine got the Crimson on the board as she scored from in front of the goal after receiving a pass from Vaillancourt at 2:38. Vaillancourt then scored her first goal of the evening, giving the Crimson a two-goal advantage. Wilson was credited with an assist on the play.
After the Raiders pulled within one on a power-play score by Kiira Dosdall at 8:20, Katharine Chute put the puck in the back of the net with her first score of the year with six minutes to go in the opening frame, making it 3-1. The teams skated into the intermission with the Crimson holding a 15-8 advantage in shots.
Wilson scored Harvard's fourth goal of the evening only 12 seconds into the first on a 4-on-3 situation with assists by Cori Bassett and Vaillancourt. Off the ensuing faceoff, the Raiders gained possession and moved into the Crimson zone. Sam Hunt found a wide open Hannah Milan who put the puck past Martin's glove and into the net at 0:25. Colgate added another goal at 4:24 by Katie Stewart to once again pull the Raiders within one tally, 4-3.
Two minutes later, Brine moved the puck along the left boards, finding Vaillancourt, who took the pass and sped down the ice. Vaillancourt swooped in towards the goal and snuck the puck past Sass for her second goal of the game, giving Harvard a 5-3 lead.
At 11:57, Hunt once again earned an assist on a score by Milan, this time coming on a Colgate power play. With two minutes to go in the second, Krista Dermott made a quick pass to Ali Edell, who was camped out in front. Edell got enough on her shot to beat Martin, tying the game 5-5 at 17:38.
Harvard pulled Martin after the second period and inserted Kessler, who made six stops in the third. The Crimson was called for three penalties, killing each one, but was 0-for-2 with an extra attacker in the final stanza as the game moved to overtime.
In the overtime period, each team could only muster one shot each before time expired. Harvard held the final count in shots, 41-27.
The Crimson is back in action Saturday when it welcomes Ivy League and ECAC Hockey rival Cornell to Bright Hockey Center. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.
