Third-Period Outburst Sinks Cornell
HANOVER, N.H. — The Big Red women’s hockey team lost
a 5-4 heartbreaker to No. 6 Dartmouth on Friday night. The Big
Green scored three goals in the third period to skate past the Big
Red. Freshman Chelsea Karpenko tallied two goals, while sophomore
Rebecca Johnston notched a goal and two assists. Junior Stephanie
Holmes also scored for Cornell. Cornell moves to 4-3-1 overall and
2-2-1 in ECAC Hockey, while Dartmouth improves to 6-1-1 and 5-1-1
in league play.
Johnston put the Big Red up 1-0 at 3:14 of the first period.
Sophomore Sam Wauer and freshman Catherine White assisted on the
goal.
Dartmouth’s Sarah Newnam evened the score at 11:49 when she
scored on the power play.
Karpenko notched her first collegiate goal at 3:30 of the second
period. Johnston tallied the assist.
The Big Green’s Jenna Cunningham tied the score once again
at 13:48 of the second, but Cornell’s Holmes gave the Big Red
back the lead at 14:52. Liz Zorn and Hayley Hughes notched the
assists.
Cornell took a 4-2 lead into the third period, when Karpenko
scored her second goal at 16:27. Johnston made her second assist of
the night.
The Big Green came back in the third period to score three
unanswered goals to win the game. Newnam notched that game-winner
at 19:05.
Sophomore Kayla Strong made 25 saves in her first loss of the
season, while Carli Clemis notched 24 saves in the win.
The Big Red will be back in action Saturday night for a 7 p.m.
game at Harvard.
