Raiders Bounce Back Tie Harvard
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. -- Sophomore
Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) recorded two goals as the
Colgate University women's hockey team played to a 5-5 overtime tie
with No. 9 Harvard on Friday, Nov. 21 at the Bright Hockey Center.
After falling behind 3-1 in the opening period the Raiders stayed
composed and responded with four goals to leave with a tie.
"I thought we reacted well to all of the adverse situations we
faced." Said Colgate head coach Scott Wiley "We were able to turn
every adverse situation into a positive."
The Crimson opened the scoring in the first with two even strength
goals from Jenny Brine and Sarah Vaillancourt before senior Kiira
Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) put Colgate on the board with her third
of the season at the 8:20 mark.
Dosdall found the back of the net unassisted during the Raiders
first power-play. Dosdall recovered the puck off the boards and
carried with her momentum as she crossed the blue line, she then
riffled a quick shot through the Harvard defender and past
goaltender Brittany Martin to narrow the gap 2-1.
"Our special teams were key for us tonight" said Wiley "Whenever
your special teams do good against Harvard you know you have a
chance."
Harvard would close the period with its third even strength goal
to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
The second period turned into an old fashion shoot-out as six goals
were posted in a 17 minute span. The Crimson began the feast with a
power-play goal 12 seconds in as Sarah Wilson would extend their
lead to 4-1.
Milan would counter 13 seconds later with her first of the night to
bring the Raiders within striking distance. Milan's was assisted by
senior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.).
Junior Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) who is riding an eight point
scoring streak extended that to nine as she netted her seventh goal
of the season to bring the Raiders within one 4-3.
Vaillancourt would record her second of the game to give Harvard a
5-3 lead but that wasn't enough as Milan would record her second of
the game and seventh of the season at the 12 minute mark followed
by junior Ali Edell (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) six minutes later to
knot the score 5-5.
Colgate was 3-for-8 on the power play and 10-for-11 on the penalty
kill. Freshman Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) recorded 36 saves
to improve to 5-1-1 on the season, while Martin recoded 15 for the
Crimson.
Colgate (7-6-1) will continue on the road tomorrow at it travels
