Brown Doubled Up by Niagara
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bears dropped a close game at Meehan
Auditorium on Friday night, losing a 4-2 decision to Niagara.
Sophomore Maggie Suprey (South Boston, MA) and junior Nicole Brown
(Swift Current, SK) each scored for Brown, keeping Bruno in the
contest to the end, but couldn't overcome the offense of the Purple
Eagles. With the loss, Brown falls to 2-6-1, while Niagara improves
to 3-9-1 overall.
The first period got the Bears off to a strong start, as they took
a 1-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. After scoring her first goal of
the season last weekend against Colgate, Brown wasted no time
picking up a second, knocking the puck past Niagara keeper Jenni
Bauer just after the halfway point of the period. Senior Savannah
Smith (Fort St. John, B.C.) was credited with an assist on the
play. Despite a plethora of shots from Niagara, goalie Nicole Stock
(Buffalo Grove, IL) stood strong in goal, pushing away all 14 shots
by the Purple Eagles.
In the second, however, Niagara found its stride, as Melanie Mills
was able to push one past Stock only three minutes into the period
to even the score. After a long stretch of tough defense, the
Purple Eagles found the back of the net again with 2:31 remaining,
as Jocey Kleiber took advantage of a power play opportunity to open
up a 2-1 lead, which would hold as the teams went into the second
intermission.
Niagara continued its strong play in the final period, scoring two
more early goals in the third. The Purple Eagles pushed one in just
over four minutes in to extend the lead to 3-1, and then trickled
one past Stock for a 4-1 advantage. Following the final goal,
sophomore Joy Joung (Torrance, CA) entered the game in net for the
Bears, playing the last 13 minutes without allowing a goal, and
making four saves. Though Suprey added her goal with 8:32 remaining
in the period, giving the Bears a second wind, Niagara's defense
was too tough, and shut down the Brown attack for the remainder of
the game.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, when they
will take on the #10 Mercyhurst Lakers at 4 p.m.
