Bears Notch Exhibition Win
Providence, R.I. -- The Brown women's hockey team opened their
season with a 4-1 exhibition win on Sunday afternoon against the
Bluewater Hawks, a competitive Canadian club team. Sophomore
goalkeeper Joy Joung (Torrance, CA) earned the win in her first
start, allowing only one goal while making 19 stops for the
Bears.
The first period started slowly for both teams, as the game
remained scoreless until there was just over a minute left in the
opening frame, when Bluewater's Stephanie Giannopoulos was able to
knock one past Joung, giving the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. Head
coach Digit Murphy and her staff were able to make the necessary
adjustments at the break, however, and the Bears out for the second
ready to take control.
Only two minutes into the period junior Erin Connors (Newburyport,
MA) notched a power play goal on a feed from sophomore Erica Kromm
(Naramata, BC) and assistant captain Andrea Hunter (Fulton, N.Y.).
Brown struck again five minutes later, when freshman Skyelar Siwak
(Olds, AB) tallied her first collegiate point, with an assist going
to junior Sasha Van Muyen (Orillia, ON). The duo hooked up again at
the 11:12 mark, as Siwak was able to deflect Van Muyen's shot into
net to give the Bears a 3-1 lead. Brown struck once more in the
third, as Kromm was able to intercept a pass and tapped in her
first goal on an open breakaway opportunity.
The Bears will open their regular season on Friday, October 24,
when they travel to Minnesota to take on St. Cloud State at 8:00 pm
CT.
