Saints Clipped by New Hampshire

Boxscore

DURHAM, N.H. -- In a rematch of last season’s NCAA Quarterfinal battle, the No. 6 St. Lawrence University women’s hockey team squared off with No. 4 New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center in Durham, NH, on Saturday at the same venue the Saints’ season came to an end in 2008. Though they led 1-0 after the opening period, the Scarlet and Brown would fall behind 3-1 in the third period and were unable to overcome the deficit, as they fell to the Wildcats by the score of 3-2.

St. Lawrence dropped their first game of the season in falling to 1-1-1 (0-0-0) overall while New Hampshire remains amongst the unbeaten in women’s hockey at 3-0-2 (0-0-2).

Despite being out-shot 10-8 in the opening frame, St. Lawrence found itself with a 1-0 lead thanks to a pair of first year students. Rookie Emma Clark took a pass from classmate Vanessa Emond and beat UNH netminder Kayley Herman at 12:37 of the first period. The goal and assist were collegiate firsts for the Saints’ newcomers and gave them an early 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, junior Brittony Chartier did her job between the pipes for St. Lawrence in the first period, as she stopped all 10 shots she faced.

New Hampshire would not get on the board until 8:07 of the second period, when Kacey Bellamy scored an unassisted short-handed goal to tie the game at 1-1. The goal would clearly switch the momentum, as UNH rattled off their second goal only a few minutes later to take a 2-1 lead at the end of two periods. Kelly Paton scored her third goal of the season at 14:33 with helpers going to Courtney Birchard and Maggie Joyce.

The second period belonged to Herman, who opened the door for her team to take a 2-1 advantage by stopping all 11 shots that came her way in the second period.

New Hampshire would push their lead to 3-1 with a goal with an extra attacker at 9:10 of the third period. Jenn Wakefield scored her fifth goal in only five games, with assists going to Bellamy and Paton.

Needing two goals to even the score, head coach Chris Wells called the Saints’ timeout at 17:39 of the third period. Opting to pull Chartier for an extra skater, the Saints would cash in at 18:05 when junior defenseman Brittaney Maschmeyer beat Herman for her first goal of the season. Junior Tara Akstull was credited with an assist on the goal.

Despite the Saints’ best efforts, though, they were unable to get the equalizer as the buzzer sounded and gave UNH a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

Special teams would prove to be a deciding factor in UNH’s win, as they finished 1-of-5 on the power play while holding St. Lawrence without a power play goal (0-for-8). Though the Saints finished with a 27-24 edge in shots on goal, Herman closed with 25 saves to Chartier’s 21 to earn the victory.

St. Lawrence will look to earn a weekend split when they travel to Boston University tomorrow, Sunday, October 19 for their first ever meeting with the Terriers. The puck is set to drop at 3:00pm.
