ERIE, Pa. - The #9 Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team scored two
goals in the first and tallied two unanswered in the third period
to defeat Rensselaer, 4-1, in non-conference action on
Saturday. The Lakers improve to 3-1 overall while the
Engineers drop to 1-4 on the season.
After scoring the game-winner the previous night, senior Hayley
McMeekin picked up right where she left off in Saturday's afternoon
tilt, scoring at 6:42 and 9:30 of the first period to give
Mercyhurst an early 2-0 lead.
The Engineers battled back at the 15:42 mark as Kendra Dunlop
scored on the power play off assists by Allysen Weidner and Laura
Gersten.
Neither team found the back of the net in the middle stanza and
Mercyhurst added a tally by Kelley Steadman at 17:30 for the
two-goal advantage. Just 16 seconds later, with the
Rensselaer goalie pulled, Ashley Cockell scored an empty-netter for
the 4-1 lead.
In goal, Hillary Patterden picked up her second victory in as many
nights making 29 saves. Sonja van der Bliek stopped 24 shots
in the loss for RPI.
The Engineers return to action next weekend when they host Niagara
on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm), respectively, at the Houston
Field House.
