Quinnipiac Shut Out by Syracuse

HAMDEN, Conn. -– The Quinnipiac University women’s
hockey team was defeated by Syracuse, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at
the TD Banknorth Sports Center. The win was the first in the
program history for the Orange which improved to 1-5 overall this
season. Quinnipiac’s record drops to 1-5 with the loss.
Syracuse jumped out to a 1-0 lead 2:51 into the first period.
Julie Rising picked up a loose puck below the goal line and slipped
it past Quinnipiac goaltender Alexa Hynes (West Roxbury, Mass.) on
a wrap-around for her first goal. Kylie Klassen and Gabrielle
Beaudry collected assists on the goal.
Quinnipiac’s Hynes made her first career start in goal for
the Bobcats. The freshman netminder stopped 22 shots through the
first two periods to keep the Bobcats within a goal heading into
the final frame down 1-0.
Syracuse captain Stefanie Marty gave the Orange a two-goal
advantage with 15:57 remaining in the third period. Marty
intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and fired a wrist shot
stick-side past Hynes for her first goal of the season.
Quinnipiac’s Trudy Reyns (Port Hope, Ontario) tried to bring
the Bobcats back in the final minutes of the game, but was denied
on a slapshot from the point by Syracuse’s Lucy Schoedel.
Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) and Brandice Moniz (Oakville,
Ontario) each had three shots on goal in the game.
Hynes stopped 27 shots in the game, while Schoedel recorded 19 to
earn the first shutout in program history.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25, when they
travel to Boston, Mass., to take on the Northeastern Huskies. The
game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start
