Raiders Sweep Niagara
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Freshman
goaltender Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) won her first
collegiate start as the Colgate women's hockey team scored four
goals in the second period to sweep Niagara with a 7-1 finale on
Saturday, Oct. 18 at Starr Rink. "I thought we played well
for 60 minutes." Said Colgate head coach Scott Wiley "What was
really nice was seeing every line contribute. I thought we were
real smart and didn't give them a lot of space. That's a good team.
They have some very talented players and are well coached. We come
out of that performance feeling really good about moving forward."
Senior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) and juniors Evan Minnick
(Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) record
two goals apiece to give Sass a comfortable cushion.
Minnick opened the scoring 7:34 in the second period on a
power-play goal from top of the circle that deflected off a post to
sneak past Niagara goalie Jenni Bauer. Dombovy and junior Beth
Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) help set up the goal with two clean
passes. Dombovy would add two even strength goals the second one
off a rebound to extend the Raiders lead to 3-0. Sophomore Hannah
Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) would end the period with a
power-play goal at the 19:24 mark. Milan knocked the puck down at
the blue line after a clearing attempt by the Purple Eagles,
she then quickly rifled a shot from that point which found the
top shelf past Bauer's right shoulder. The Raiders were out-shot in
the period 9-8 but entered the second intermission with a 4-0 lead.
Four goals in one period is a new Colgate record.
The third period saw more Colgate scoring as Hunt recorded her
fourth power-play goal of the season to widen the lead 5-0. Hunt
was assisted by Milan and senior Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.).
Niagara claimed its only goal when Jocey Kleiber tapped one in off
a rebound at the 8:11 mark, but Hunt answered back unassisted 12
seconds later for her second of the day, fifth of the season.
Minnick added her second goal of the game at 18:04 to finish the
scoring 7-1. Rotenberg and senior Clancy Todd (Thorold, Ont.)
assisted the goal.
"Sass was solid and that is what we need out of our goaltenders.
Said Wiley "What we need is a solid performance and a couple big
saves and she did that. She's a good goaltender and we know that.
Good performances make my job harder but I like
that."
Sass finished the game with 19 saves, while Bauer turned away 14
and Jill Zelonis six for Niagara.
Colgate was 4-for-8 on the power play and 7-for-7 on the penalty
kill. The sweep extends the Raiders unbeaten streak at home to
three games and improves the series record versus Niagara to 8-5-1.
Colgate (3-2) will hit the road next week as they travel to
Detroit, Mich., for a two game series against Wayne State. The
first game is scheduled for Friday Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
