Boxscore

HAMDEN, Conn. –- The Quinnipiac University women’s ice hockey team defeated Syracuse, 4-2, Friday night at the TD Banknorth Sports Center for their first victory of the 2008-09 season. Senior forward Elyse Cole (Belleville, Ontario) scored twice for the Bobcats in the win to tie the program’s career goal-scoring record with 36 set last season by Vicky Graham. The win was the first at Quinnipiac for Head Coach Rick Seeley.

Breana Burton (Surrey, British Columbia) netted her first goal of the season and Stacey Kmill (Thunder Bay, Ontario) scored her first career goal midway through the third. Quinnipiac improves its record to 1-4, while the Orange remain winless with a 0-6 mark.

The Bobcats got on the board first at the 13:42 mark of the first period. Melissa Perry (Chelsea, Mich.) ripped a shot from the left point during a Quinnipiac power play. Janine Duffy (Toronto, Ontario) attempted to tip the shot in the high slot, but her deflection landed on the stick of Cole at the left side of the net who flicked it past Syracuse goaltender Lucy Schoedel. The assist was the first point of Perry’s career.

Quinnipiac made it 2-0 just under a minute into the second period. Burton followed her own rebound after her first shot was deflected and was able to put the second shot in for the goal.

Syracuse cut the lead in half at the 5:07 mark of the second period. Stefanie Marty received the pass between the faceoff circles from Lisa Mullan and shot the puck into the upper right corner of the net.

The Bobcats made it 3-1 with Cole’s second power play goal of the game at the 6:19 mark of the second period. Senior Captain Trudy Reyns (Port Hope, Ontario) passed from just inside the blueline to Cole stationed to the left of the net for the one-timer past Schoedel.

The Orange scored at the 19:33 mark of the second period to make it 3-2. Cheyenne Bojeski received the puck from Mullan in the low slot and slipped the puck by Quinnipiac goaltender Nanna Holm Glaas (Stockholm, Sweden).

Kmill scored the lone goal in the third period at the 11:10 mark. Reyns took a shot from the right of the net that Schoedel kicked to her left onto Kmill’s stick. The freshman left wing wristed the puck past Schoedel for her first collegiate point.

Holm Glaas made 18 saves for the Bobcats in earning her first collegiate win. Schoedel stopped 19 Quinnipiac shots for Syracuse in the loss.

The Bobcats and the Orange square off again tomorrow at the TD Banknorth Center in Hamden, Conn. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start.
