Bobcats Fall to BU at Home
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team lost to No. 7 ranked Boston University, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. Junior Evelina Husar (Eskilstuna, Sweden) scored the lone goal for the Bobcats, the first of her career. The Bobcats' record drops to 2-11-1 with the loss, while the Terriers improve to 8-2-3.
Boston University struck first at the 11:48 mark of the first period. Jenelle Kohanchuk sent the puck through the crease to Gina Kearns positioned at the left of Quinnipiac goaltender Nanna Holm Glaas (Stockholm, Sweden). Kearns took a hard shot just under Glaas' stick for her sixth goal of the season. Kohanchuk and Jillian Kirchner picked up assists on the goal.
The Bobcats tied the game at the 18:31 mark with Husar's power play goal. Husar, stationed at the top of the crease, deflected a Trudy Reyns' (Port Hope, Ontario) slapshot from the left point that slipped between the pads of Melissa Haber. Jordan Elkins (Wasilla, Alaska) collected her second assist of the season after making the initial pass to Reyns at the other point position.
The Terriers took the lead with one second remaining in the first period. Melissa Anderson won the faceoff for the Terriers and passed to Lauren Cherewyk who fired a shot above the left shoulder of Glaas. Anderson was credited with an assist on the play.
Two more goals from the Terriers in the second period gave them a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes of play. Anderson won another faceoff 26 seconds into the period and passed to Erin Seman to the right of the faceoff circle. Seman ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the net. Anderson and Seman struck again at the 16:05 mark of the period. Anderson took a shot to the right of the net that bounced off Quinnipiac goaltender Tia Wishart's (Vancouver Island, British Columbia) pads onto the stick of Seman. She slid the puck past the reach of Wishart's pads for her second goal of the contest.
The Terriers made it a four-goal lead, 5-1, at the 5:08 mark of the third period. Tara Watchorn deked around a Quinnipiac defender and snapped a shot over the left shoulder of Wishart for her second goal of the season.
Quinnipiac goaltenders Glaas and Wishart combined for 22 saves while Boston University's Haber recorded seven saves in earning the win.
The Bobcats return to action Friday, Nov. 21, when they take on Clarkson at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
